A brick from the brick yard, specially made with "Nauvoo" written on it; samples of homemade candles, gingerbread men cookies, horseshoe nail rings, etc. Our family always tries to find license plates from all 50 states while traveling. Would you believe we got all but one? What state do you think it was? Rhode Island was the only one we didn't see. We found some individualized license plates including "Blush", "Autumn", "Happy Pa", "Go Cart", and just the other day I saw "Music". I believe there is a story behind every one of those license plates. Incidently, we came home over the Fourth of July weekend and hardly saw an officer of the law anywhere. Of course there is freeway all the way and they are safer than roads where the officers probably were concentra-ting. Neither was the traffic too heavy which was surprising. We have just returned from Missouri and Illinois where we attended a family reunion and visited Nauvoo and Carthage. Last winter when we went to the Holiday Bowl I reported seeing many of our fellow Pleasant Grove residents in Tiajuana, Mexico. Now I am happy to report we saw many local residents, or former residents, in Nauvoo. In the old print shop we talked with Barney Hilton who, with his wife, is on an LDS mission there. Next door, in the old John Taylor home, was Horace and Verna Walker, also serving a mission there. Everyone told us to be sure and see Elder Kevin Peay at the Visitors Center and we did. He looked great and asked a lot of questions about home. Shortly after visiting with Kevin, in walked President Leon Walker so we really had an "old home day." Speaking of Kevin, we saw him v perform "Sweet Violets" with another elder at the Cultural Hall one night. It was a riot so we suggest that someone ask him to do it when he comes home in late October or November. Those who have not been to Nauvoo since the restoration was begun should certainly try to go sometime. Tours of the old homes and businesses was a highlight of my life. The guides told little tidbits about the homes and the people that lived in them as well as showing everyone around. One thing that was interesting was the "sparking lamp". We should have them now-a-day- When a young lady was having a swain over for an evening, the father of the girl would put oil in the lamp and light the wick. It is a very small lamp. When the oil was gone and the light went out the boy must go home. A conniving father could just put a small amount of oil in if he did not Briefly: Renovation Begins Renovation of the old junior high school at 100 East 200 South into a community center is now underway as workers remove portions necessary to begin the work. Pleasant Grove City Council last week awarded the renovation contract to Tom Hamann Construc- - Pleasant Grove City Council last week awarded the renovation contract to Tom Hamann Construc-tion, low bidder on the project. His bid was $190,000. Some change orders will be made during the renovation which will make the actual cost $178,500, Mr. Hamann told the city council last week. The council received a total of nine bids on the project with the highest bid being $265,600. The contract allows 120 days for completion of the renovation. City residents approved a $200,000 bond election to remodel and equip the building. The structure will be used for all types of community events as well as sports and roller skating. The area around the building will be landscaped with a parking lot being provided on the east side of the structure. Architect for the project is the Architectural Partnership. Bill Hoglund said he would find the funds to finish equipping the building out of his budget for 1982-83- . Well to be Fixed Tony Brooks, Pleasant Grove City Water Superintendent, said today that it will be at least two more weeks before they will have the parts to put the Monson Well back together. The pump burned out about two weeks ago after running 24 hours a day for seven days. The pump was 25 years old, Brooks said. The Monson Tank services homes west of 400 East. Until then the system is being served by the Brimley Well which has just been switched to an automatic system and the springs which feed into the Monson System, Brooks noted. The Brimley well has a very good flow and 550 gallons a minute are coming through the spring, the superintendent added. Some residents in the area of 1100 N. and 300 E. have been switched to the Battlecreek System in order to improve their water pressure, Brooks explained. Residents are using 4 million gallons in 24 hours this summer on the Monson system. Supt. Brooks suggested that all people use good common sense in their water usage. Good times to water lawns are 7 a.m. 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Those with automatic sprinkling systems could water during the night, he said. Some of the homes switched to the Battlecreek System are receiving quite high water pressure some of the time. The superintendent suggested those people get a pressure regulator for their lines if they live in this area. He also cautioned homowners not to remove the pop-of- f valve on their water heaters or replace it with a cap. The pop-of- f valve can prevent the pressure from building up until an explosion takes place. Brooks said that he would be happy to answer any questions or give assistance where necessary to make sure that pressure regulators and pop-of- f valves are in place. |
