Show V--- : , . Steel Days Competition Local Athletes' Compete In Tourney The Third Annual A and W Restaurant - Steel Days Open was completed Saturday July 10 at Tri-Cit- y Supreme Courts. The tour-nament was very successful with over 150 separate entries. The tournament ran 4 nights with the finals on Saturday. Players from throughout the state entered as the tournament was sanctioned by the Utah Racquetball Association. This is the third time A and W Restaurant in American Fork has sponsored this summer tournament. Ron Peterson, manager-owne- r of the local francise provided shirts and rootbeer floats to each entrant. Rick Strout, the number three ranked mens player in the state, and the Racquetball Pro at the Sportsmall in Salt Lake City won the mens open division with the $75 cash award.-Rand- Strong of Provo qon $25 along with his second place finish. Ron Peck of American Fork took the con-solation honors. Also of interest Tom Nissalke the former Jazz Coach made an impressive showing winning his first two matchs before losing his third round match in a er to Randy Strong. In the womens open division the states number one ranked lady Anita Torti of Salt Lake City won the $50 first place prize money with Susan Terry of American Fork taking second. Excellent women's fastpitch soft- - , ball was seen in Pleasant Grove over the weekend when the annual Timp Classic with 16 teams, 8 A and 8 B teams, battled for first place honors in the three day tournament. By Saturday, afternoon, no PG teams were left in the running, but' those who came out to watch saw- - , L I ; Host Mountain View Saturday i Vikings Win 3--1 s Over Springville J When Don Grothe's first pitch disappeared over the left centerfield fence, the general reaction was, "Oh, oh, this is going to be a long game. " But it didn't phase Grothe and that run proved to be Springville's last. Grothe allowed only two hits in recording the next 21 outs while PG , scored three runs to take home the win, J' The Vikings scored their runs in the sixth inning. Clark Hill, returning to action after missing five weeks with a i broken bone in his hand, led off with a I i double. The Wasatch Bank team had dropped the first game to Little Acorn of the American Fork League, 3-- with Lonnie Gleave dazzling the Bank players with a vicious "knuckle ball." Trailing 3 in the second and final game, Brannin got hold of a Butch Dunn fast ball and drove it ove the centerfield fence, scoring Terry Seamons who had singled. With the game tied, Alan Bjarnson got a hit followed by Alan Green's single and with two strikes, Parry bounced the ball between third and short to score the winning run. Ed Anderson were 9 for 16 during the tourney, with John Beck having an excellent tourney with 7 for 13. Roundabout: Gramm Wins A weeks rest from racing only seemed to whet the appetites of the Roundabout competitors. Lovely Diane Oostaveen presented the awards to the winner of the trophy dashes. Jess Gramm from Wallsburg took the lead in the teen stock class with Troy Davis in hot pursuit. Bobby Leonard spun out and reliable Corinna Rhodes finished third. Gary Davis and Marty West timed identical fast times for the class and sat side by side on the front row. It as a battle from start to finish with Davis taking the win and West second. Tempers flared in the stock division as Alex Oostaveen and Larry Parks crashed and banged around the track. Both drivers were disqualified from at event and the prize was given to Danny Rhodes. John Jackman took the lead in the Stock heat but due to a re"start lobby Leonard got a better hold on e race and won out with Jackman nd and Troy Davis third. DonWillingham took the lead in the "st turn of the Limited heat after a when Gary Davis went over we end of the track. Davis got back Wo the heat and once again JJWingham dashed into the lead with "larty West in hot pursuit, battling on every turn but to no avail. Willineham took the win with West second and Norm Rhodes third. Billy Nelson took the lead in the heat race as well as the main event for the stock class and showed the boys the short way around the track. LeAlma Rhodes did a fantastic job by placing second in the heat and Alex Oostaveen settled for third in the heat. Teen Main event finally made three starts before everyone made it safely through turn one and two as is the rule for a fair start. Bobby Leonard ran away with the win with Troy Davis fighting with all he had. Corinna Rhodes placed third. Limited Main event showed Don Willingham in the lead but this time Norm Rhodes pulled off the win after an exciting battle, Garry Davis worked his way through to second place and Willingham settled for third. Next week will be the Mid Season Championship at the track with the most coveted of titles for the years racing. The winner is given a very special trophy, made and donated this year by Howard Sorensen, also a championship jacket. This is a ts race toward the Season award, but is a race for Mid Season Champion only. Needless to say all the drivers will be racing their hardest. |
