Show 1982 - Page 5 Review - Wednesday, December 22, - - 'A Gift of Love' a story by a Pleasant Grove student - 'i Mikey went running across the his street dodging the carriages. The streets were very crowded. He managed to push his way through and get to the toy shop window. He plastered his little hands and jheny red nose against the window. In the display window was a toy train going around on it's track with Santa in the caboose. His eyes sparkled with glee and every now gnd then little giggles would spurt out. He was having so much fun. Then Peter, his brother, grabbed The next day they were home. Mikey ran off again to who knows where? ... He walked into a gift wrapping shop and asked for three wrapped boxes. He gave the man three shillings and took the boxes and ran all the way home. He stuck the "presents" under the tree. Christmas morning had come. There were only four presents under the shabby tree. Malisa was the first up. She went and got everyone. Mikey opened his first, it was mittens. The rest tore furiously at theirs. There was nothing in them. "Mikey how come there's nothing in them?" his mom asked. 'There is mum. Every thing you ever wanted is in that box, use your imagination." "It's a lovely gift," she said. That Christmas was the best, the gift of love was given. Their house glowed the brightest that day. For they were happy. Tanner arm and said, "C'mon Mikey Mum wants us home. We mus ready for get tomorrow, we're gorn' to Greenwich." "Why?" "Cause Mums selling her cheese up there." "Oh" he sighed softly. The night air was getting colder The little clothes they had on were barely keeping them warm. Mikey didn't want to go to Greenwich, because it brought back bad memories. He vaguely remembers but knows that his father was in an accident in Greenwich. His mom said daddy would be back that night but he never came. They walked in the door. Their mom was standing there. Such a beautiful woman. Blonde long hair pulled up in a bun. Deep blue eyes and a loving look on her face. Mikey ran up and gave her a tight squeeze. Peter was too big to give hugs but he gave her one anyway. Malisa, his little sister popped out from the other room. She was holding Muffin, the cat. She had crumbs smeared all over her face. (She had been eating corn cake that their mom had been making that day.) It was 2:30 when they got home. Their mom gave them some beans and com cake. She tucked them in to bed, kissed all three and told them to get enough sleep for the next day. Peter got up and rubbed his sleepy eyes. Malisa was very hungry. She was whinning like a little puppy. Mikey quietly got up and dressed himself. His mom had sticky mush on the table. It was very quiet except for Malisa, she was excited to go to Greenwich. They loaded in the carriage. Their shabby horse up front, the three children climbed in back on the cheese. Mikey started singing Christmas songs, then they all joined in. It was an hour ride from Penge to Greenwich. When they arrived there, all three kids eyes glistened with joy. There were decorations every-where. Peter, Mikey and Malisa were sort of confused though. They couldn't figure out why there was a Santa on every corner, ringing his bell. They were still very happy. Many children were laughing and running about. Their mom told them to stay near by although they didn't want to. They went to the cheese store. Everything was full of the Christmas spirit. Peter was being a big boy and carried a half block of cheese. Mikey could only carry the little hunks of cheese and Malisa just watched. The nice old man who owned the store went to his box and pulled out 10 pounds instead of the regular seven. "Merry Christmas," he said in a sweet tone," and for you three, a shilling each." I'll leave the packages here, and when your parents wake up you can open the presents." When the man left, his parents came out of their bedroom. "Who was that at the door?" asked his Dad. "It was Santa!" cried Chris. "Then why don't we jpen the presents?" said his Mom. When the packages were open, they found spacesuits with a note which read: "We will be boarding the shuttles at noon tomorrow." At noon the next day the family entered the shuttle. Tomlin Eighth Grade P.G. Junior High It was an unusual Christmas Eve, thought Chris. It was snowing like it always did on Christmas, but the snow was gray instead of white, and the flakes didn't glisten by the light of the lamp post near the house. Nor did the snow stick when it hit the ground, even though it was bitterly cold. Instead it melted into nothingness. The snow wasn't affected by the wind either, even though it was howling loudly and shaking the branches of the nearby trees violently. The wind would make flying very difficult, Chris thought. Surely this would be a Christmas like no other. This would be the first Christmas after the earth had changed its orbit around the sun and started turning into a barren, dry, lifeless nothingness. The government was building more space shuttles and suits so everyone could go to the more habitable planets. Now all the people left alive were living in this single town. "Chris," cried his mother, "come to dinner!" He walked in and saw some dehydrated hamburger, wilted carrots and condensed milk. Chris had a hard time eating that night because he couldn't stand the thought of eating old, and dehydrated food on Christmas Eve. After dinner, the family went straight to bed. Early the next morning Chris got up to see what Santa had brought him, but nothing was there. Then he heard a knock at the door. It was a man dressed like Santa. the man said. "Merry Christmas I' ve brought you and your family a present." |
