Eileen Peterson, present at signing. Governor Declares April 1-7 As Foreign Language Week Utahns of information and skills needed to exercise their duties and responsibilities, as citizens." "This declaration states our concern about the Foreign Language programs in Utah, as well as the reasoning behind such a 'week,' " said Dr. Wendell Hall, President of the Utah Foreign Language Association. Most of Utah's school districts will be participating par-ticipating in events emphasizing the study of foreign language. April 1-7 has been declared by Gov. Scott M. Matheson as Utah Foreign Language Week. The declaration, signed by Gov. Matheson, says in part "... the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe committed the United states to encourage en-courage the study of foreign languages and civilizations as an important im-portant means of expanding ex-panding communication com-munication among people for their better acquaintance with the culture of each country, as well as for the strengthening of international inter-national cooperation, and "Whereas, the study of foreign areas, cultures and laguages in Utah is in a decline contrary to this commitment com-mitment accepted in the Helsinki Agreement of 1975, and ''Whereas, this decline is not in the national interest of the United States because it limits possibilities for increased mutual understanding un-derstanding and international inter-national cooperation and because it denies growing numbers of |
