Show THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 1979 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY. APRIL 5, 1979 Jack Says . . . Local Talent Inferior to Other Colleges in Nation by Jack Hill "Best sports show in the nation." Thats what some call the NCAA basketball tour-ney. With the Western Regional s held in Provo and finals in Salt Lake, Utah basketball fans had a chance to see the nations best basketball talent in action. Local fans were both gratified and disturbed by what they saw. Gratified because of the excellence of play, skill and ability demon-strated and disturbed because it became evident how inferior local college talent is when compared to players across the nation. BYU made it to the final 40 by winning the W.A.C. With a young and exciting team, the Cougars will no doubt be W.A.C. contenders again next year. Coach Arnold ate some of his rash statements ("you will never see BYU play a zone defense as long as I'm coach") to put together a champion-ship squad. By the thousands, fan's returned to "Big Mac" watch players like Danny Ainge, Fred Roberts and Allen Taylor win the con-ference title. But, as one die-har- d Cougar fan stated, "BYU is light-year- s away from the final four." He was probably right. Ainge, excellant player (with the excep-tion of being an official cry baby) reverts to bench warmer status when compared to a DePaul Gary Garland; UCLA Roy Hamilton or Michigan States "Magic" Johnson. Fred Roberts gave W.A.C. opponents trouble in his freshmen year and will do so for the next three seasons. Even terrorizing them on occasion. But mat-ched against a David Greenwood of UCLA, Greg Kelser of Michigan State or In-diana States Larry Bir, Roberts doesn't come out to well. With "hard working" Allan Taylor, it was evident that hard working players, with "talent", will always be better. Unless things change Cougar fans will have to be content with being competitive in the W.A.C. Facilities-Skiing at Snowbird Saturday, I met a group of basketball fans from Chicago. Along with the "great snow", these fans were very impressed with te "fantastic basketball facilities in Utah." They had seen BYU's Marriott center and thought Utah's Special Events Center was great. When I told them that both Weber & Utah State had new 10,000 plus seat arenas, they were truly . amazed. Many schools in their area (DePaul, Marquet-te, etc) play in old buildings that seat 6,000 or less. What we need is some of their great players to go in our great facilities. PROCLAMATION R. Alan Meredith, Renee Moniot, Jeanette Du-bac- h, Janice Shaw, Andy Martinez, Paul F. Luckau, Elliot C. Howe, Ernest J. Wilkins, Oren E. Moffett. Eileen Peterson, present at signing. Governor Declares April 1-- 7 As Foreign Language Week Utahns of information and skills needed to exercise their duties and responsibilities, as citizens." "This declaration states our concern about the Foreign Language programs in Utah, as well as the reasoning behind such a 'week,' " said Dr. Wendell Hall, President of the Utah Foreign Language Association. Most of Utah's school districts will be par-ticipating in events emphasizing the study of foreign language. April 7 has been declared by Gov. Scott M. Matheson as Utah Foreign Language Week. The declaration, signed by Gov. Matheson, says in part "... the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe committed the United states to en-courage the study of foreign languages and civilizations as an im-portant means of e-xpanding com-munication among people for their better acquaintance with the culture of each country, as well as for the strengthening of inter-national cooperation, and "Whereas, the study of foreign areas, cultures and laguages in Utah is in a decline contrary to this com-mitment accepted in the Helsinki Agreement of 1975, and ''Whereas, this decline is not in the national interest of the United States because it limits possibilities for increased mutual un-derstanding and inter-national cooperation and because it denies growing numbers of A.F. The effected property owners will be contacted about this matter. An agreement has been prepared by the Pleasant Grove Irrigation Co. and was reviewed. After a discussion of this agreement, the council voted to further investigate specific terms of the agreement. The meeting with officials of the Bureau of Reclamation, which was held Monday, was discussed by Mayor Haynie. He noted that he felt that these people now know why the city officials are opposed to the prop-osed aqueduct. Councilman Frank Mills was authorized to write to the Provo River Water Users indicating the city's desire to have the canal piped or covered and suggesting that cooperation be given in this regards with the plan of the Bureau of Reclamation. Olympathon '79 A request to proclaim the week of April 14-2- 1 as Olympathon '79 to recognize the assistance needed by the U.S. Olympic Committee was reviewed. The council voted to authorize the mayor to make this proclamation. The council discussed the Federal Highway Dept.'s concern about the time and temperature sign located in the triangle on South Main. Through the State Dept. of Transportation, pressures are being brought to bear to have this sign removed. The council authorized a letter to be sent to the state to request that the sign remain because of the service it provides the citizens of the com-munity and the identity that it provides the city. Representatives from Savage Brothers Co. met with the council to become familiar with the council members and to report that the com-pany had purchased Plats D and G of the Wade Springs Subdivision. They discussed the course of ac-tion to follow in developing this area and the council noted that the necessary fees and bonds need to be provided the city before development can begin. The company representatives in-dicated they will work with the Community Development Director in getting this land approved for development. Cleanup Days The council discussed the up-coming Cleanup Days and noted the problem with not having a site where the debris can be collected and bur-ned. It was noted that the costs at the landfill make it almost impossible to haul the debris collected on cleanup days to the landfill without first bur-ning as much as possible. A possible site to burn will be looked into. The council then set the Cleanup Days for Saturday, May 12 and Saturday, May 19. The city will be divided into two areas with one side of the city being collected on May 12 and the other side on May 19. fLet Us Refinish Your Bathtub!
