Wednesday Nov. 22, 6:30 Dougs TV - Mills, 7:30 Inter Mt. Gift Wimmers Eng., 8:30 Southam Warburton Wil's Kasco. Games are played at the Boys gym in the Sr. high School. Tuesday night saw the opening games of the 1978-7- 9 Sr. Mens Fast-Brea- k Basketball league. With 14 teams vieing for the League Championship it promises to be an ex-citing year. Those team involved represent a number of local spon-sors, and appreciation is extended to them for their support of the City Recreation Program. Following last years close finish where the last night of play could have thrown the league into a 5 way tie for fir-st place, we are looking forward to the same kind of balance this year. However, there appear to be several teams which have im-proved and should challenge for the championship. The Mill's teams coached by Frank Mills won its first ball game in 4 years last night, dumping J&D Painters by a large score. Mills has recruited a number of young players led by Joe Howe, Robert Keate, Greg Bean coupled with veterans Robert Morton, and Nyle Ricans promises to be a solid club. They were led by Joe Howes 17 points last night. The Kinsmen again appear to be the club to beat, as they beat a good Westland Realty team in their first outing. The Kinsmen sponsored by Mike Shoell and David Mathews Brick Con-tractors, have a veteran club which have played together for a number of year, and have probably the best team-wor- k of any team in the league. Colby Adamson was the leading scorer for the Kinsmen and appears to be headed for scoring honors again this year. Southam-Warburto- n Aluminum made the debut back into the league a successful one with a hard fought vic-tory over a new team Kelly's Plumbing. Both teams showed flashes of excellent play and as the season progresses and they become accustomed to each others play, they will both win more ball games. The Southam-Warburto- n team spon-sored by Les Southam and Dale Warburton were led by Lee d and Dave Holdaway. Bryan Carter, new team with name and sponsors to be announ-ced. Games will be played at the Boys Gym at the Sr. High School on Saturday Mornings. Those who enjoy wat-ching good boys basketball, are en-couraged to come out and enjoy the games. With tryouts com-pleted for the 1978-7- 9 Basketball Season, the Bantam Basketball will be expanded to 8 teams. The teams were expanded so to give more boys and opportunity to play. Rather than having a lot of 8th grade boys on a team it was felt the ex-pansion was necessary in order to give this age group boy an op-portunity to play. Teams are made up of 8th and 7th grade boys, with the teams being brought up to a 12 man roster with 6th grade boys. The 6th grade boys who made the Bantam Teams, may par-ticipate in both the Bantam program and their respective home-rooms teams in the 6th grade elementary program. League play will commence during the later part of December and conclude with the City League Tour-nament in March, with 3 teams going into the Bantam Region Tour-nament. The Bantam program is sponsored here in Pleasant Grove by the City Recreation in cooperation with the Utah National Guard and a number of local Merchants spon-soring the teams. Coaches for this years teams are: Doug Hooley and Ellis Allred - Bullets, sponsored by Kazco Mfg. Mark Williams Spirits, sponsored by Wasatch Bank of P.G. Kent Wells - Knicks. sponsored by Chicken Time. Arden Kitchen and Ray Clements - Lakers, sponsored by Walker Mobil. Bill Anderson, George Hallam - 76'ers, Sponsored by Bayly Mfg. Co. Darwin Cottle and Sons, Gunners, spon-sors to be named. Layne Butt, New team with name and Soccer Has Girls Day The Utah Youth Soc-cer Association (UYSA) will be sponsoring "Girls Day" on Satur-day November 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Jordan Intermediate School, 1040 West 600 South, Salt Lake City. Girls soccer is new, and growing in Utah, proving that soccer is not just a game for boys anymore. The Girls League, which consists of 22 teams, has just completed their first season. "Girls Day" will provide an opportunit for interested girls throughout the state, ages 6 to 14 to see soc-cer in action. A clinic will be held that day where soccer skills will be introduced and demonstrated by par-ticipating coaches, all of whom volunteer their time and talents. There is no charge for the day's activities, and spectators are en-couraged. The Utah Youth Soc-cer Association is af-filiated with the United State Soccer Federation which in-cludes all pro and college organizations, and U.S. Olympics, which is affiliated with FIFA, the world soccer board.
