Show THURSDAY. JULY 6, 1978 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, JULY 6,1978 ' ERA Realtors Collect Over $600,000 in MDA Drive Pleasant Grove, July 5, 1978 More than $602,000 was collected nationwide on Sunday, May 7, by thousands of ERA Realtors and sales associates in their "A Day in May of MDA" home to home fund raising campaign, it was announced today by Gretchen Paulsen, Broker of ERA Moun-tain Land Realty, Pleasant Grove. ERA is a nationwide home marketing service with 40 offices in Utah. According to Mrs. Paulsen, the campaign received tremendous support from homeowners who opened their hearts and their pocketbooks to give the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Mrs. Paulsen said ERA Realtors and sales associates collected $10,165 in Utah for the "Fight Against Muscular Dystrophy," and were welcomed at each stop along the way. "We were happy with the positive response of homeowners we visited on May 7," 'Mrs. Paulsen said. "Many said they were expec-ting us to stop by because they had seen the televised appeal we filmed with Jerry Lewis. I have a warm place in my heart for those who made a con-tribution. Now we're more confident than ever that ERA will reach its goal of $1,000,000 for MDA in 1978." Local government of-ficials helped support Muscular Dystrophy Day in Utah Mrs. Paulsen said. The money collected on May 7 becomes part of the grand total to be announced by ERA President Jim Jackson and Vice President Michael Jackson to Jerry Lewis on the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, Mrs. Paulsen said. Overloaded Vehicle Causes Accidents .The Tire Industry Safety Council warns vacationing motorists that serious accidents can be caused by an overloaded car or station wagon. "Too much weight can severely damage tires as well as cause springs and shock ab-sorbers to fail," said Council Chairman Malcolm R. Lovell, Jr. "Excessive loads cause abnormal tire flexing and even for a short period of time can cause hidden damage to the tire. Abnormal heat is generated in the tread shoulder and can start a separation, leading to eventual failure of the tire. "Furthermore, ex-cessive flexing can cause cord breakage in the sidewall area. Even if the load is reduced to normal, the damage can progress and ultimately P lead to tire failure. This 5 could result in an ac- - cident and personal in-- t jury, sometimes long after the damage initially occurred," ; Lovell said. He also pointed out ' that overloading makes a vehicle harder to con-trol, and suggested that drivers read their car owner's manual to determine the maximum safe load before starting on a trip. "The load which a tire will safely carry depends on its size, load range or ply rating and its inflation pressure," Lovell said. "It's the air pressure that enables a tire to support the load. Therefore proper in-flation is critical." He sakl the only sure way "to prevent overloading is to weigh the fully loaded vehicle, axle by axle, on reliable platform scales. Such scales may be found at highway weighing stations, building sup-ply firms, coal yards, scrap yards and the like. "Car owners can learn a lot about their tires if they would read the sidewalls," he con-tinued. "For example 'Max. Load 1500 lbs. 32 psi maximum pressure' tells you what the tire's load limit and maximum cold inflation pressure are." The Tire Industry Safety Council offers a free Consumer Tire Guide that further ex-plains the symbols on the sidewall of a tire. It may be obtained by sending a stamped business-size- d envelope to Tire Industry Safety Council, Box 1801, Washington, D.C. 20013. If a planned load calls for inflation pressures higher than the maximum permitted, reduce the load, or use the same size tire with a higher load range. If it fits on the car use a larger size tire, but only if it is recommended as an optional size by the auto manufacturer, Lovell said. "Many car owners are unaware of the stress and strain placed on tires and the suspension system by excessive loads. That's why they should check the owners manual before loading the family car and heading for a long vacation. Too much weight could spoil the trip and possibly lead to a serious accident." f N Can't afford another baby? Maybe you have waited because of high costs?
