Show American Legion Auxiliary Hears Girl Staters Reports The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 70 meeting was held Friday, June 30, at the home of Donna Walker, chairman for the Girl State program. Reporting their experiences while attending Girls State in Cedar City, were Heidi Hicks and Barbara Keate. They report a very interesting and worthwhile time spent there with approximately ap-proximately 380 Girl Staters from Utah. Girls State is an intensize study of government in action. It is done with the intent of preparing girls for the responsibilities of good leadership. The Unit 70 meeting was conducted conduc-ted by Thelma Barnes. Pledge and Preamble were recited by the group, led by Mary Washburn. Prayer was given by Lydia Hilton, and "America the Beautiful" was sung by the group, led by Donna Walker and accompanied ac-companied by Reva Ahman. June Monson read the minutes of the previous meeting. Unit 70 was awarded the National Citation for exceeding the membership member-ship quota for the year. This entitled four girls to attend Girls State from Pleasant Grove. Elysium Club, Cadmus Cad-mus Club, the Fireman's Auxiliary, Bank of Pleasant Grove, Wasatch Bank of Pleasant Grove, Monson and Co., and the American Legion Auxiliary were the sponsors for the girls. Pleasant Grove High School students winning in the Utah State Dept. poppy poster contest were Tanya Gren, first place and Dawn Foot, third, they were presented awards from the American Legion Auxiliary Utah Department. American Legion Unit 70 1978-79 officers elected and installed were as follows: Thelma Barnes, president; LaVone Anderson, 1st vice president; Venice Fugal, 2nd vice president; June Monson, secretary-treasurer. Mary Bezzant was named Chaplain, Helen Walker, historian; Mary Washburn, Sgt.-at-Arms. Chairmen appointed were as follows: Sarah Monson and Irene Jenkins, music; Bobbie Duvall, foreign relations; Lorna Walker, legislative; Reva Ahman, rehabiliation; Donna Walker and Florence Holt, Americanis,; Pearl Fowlke and Elodia Goss, Gold Star Mothers; Joanne Barnes, Girls State and Arvilla Harvey, conservation committee and Mary Bezzant, education and school committee. Refreshments were served by the committee, Donna Walker and Helen Walker. Guests present were Mrs. Robert Hicks, Mrs. Kenneth Keate and Mrs. Spencer Hayes. |
