Ice, Cold, Snow Storms Add to Hazard of Driving The complex task of driving is made even more so by the unpredictable and unfamiliar driving conditions brought on by winter, says the Utah Safe-ty Council. Ice, snow, cold, sorms, and poor visibility all combine to make the driver's job demanding and painstak-ing. Records show that November and December generally have more fatal and non-fat- acci-dents than any other months of the year. "This indicates that drivers are not taking the extra care called for in driving in the hazardous conditions brought on by winter," said Leo H. Barlow, Utah Safety Council's Vice President for Traffic. 'Motorists, lulled by the ease of modern driving, especially fail to adjust their driving to meet early winters changing conditions of roadway and vis-ibility." "They allow themselves to be trapped in a situation which end in a traffic mishap," Bar-low stated. "They fail to heed the change in road and weath-er conditions, and attempt to drive as if it were midsum-mer." A few simple precautions for winter drivers include driving at reduced speeds. By doing so, it was pointed out, drivers will have their vehicle under control for any situation. Have your vehicle winteriz-ed; check the brakes; make certain that the windshield wiper blades are adequate; have the heating system check-ed and in top operating con-dition ,and above all, have suf-ficient anti-freez- e in the radia-tor to take you through the coldest periods. Have your vehicle equipped with snow tires andor have reinforced tire chains. Also of importance to the winter dri-ver is adequate vision. Prior to starting off on any trip, re-gardless of the distance, clear all windows of fog, frost or ice. You have to see to avoid a traffic mishap. "Winter driving presents many hazards. Most of them can be lessened by reducing speed and using a little extra caution, common - sense Cindy Tiayne Sings Wiih Ricks Choir Cindy Thayne of Pleasant Grove, Utah has been named as a member of the Ricks Col-lege Women's Choir, recently announced by Mrs. Florence Bowman, director. The group is composed of 72 girls who sing at devotionals and will present a concert on Nov. 17 along with the Men's choir. The group were also a part of the Ricks combined choir which sang at the LDS Church quarterly conference session in Salt Lake City. They will also sing at the combined choir Christmas concert Dec. 12. |
