| Show League ea rue I Luncheon Leon oll The spring membership luncheon of the League of Women Voters was held at atLee's atLee's atLee's Lees Lee's Cafe Saturday May 23 with 29 members and guests present MRS LAWRENCE Dechart conducted the meeting and gave a report of the National convention held in Washington Washington Washington Wash Wash- ington DC D.C. Mrs Mary Lowe and Mrs Kaye Arnold assisted assist assist- ed with arrangements for the luncheon Mr and Mrs Gene McDaniels McDaniels were special t guests Mr McDaniels chief probation officer officer officer of of- of- of for the Davis County Juvenile Juvenile Juvenile Ju Ju- Ju- Ju venile Court was the guest speaker He told of the problems problems problems lems of youth in Davis County and outlined the Juvenile Court activity in Utah from 1856 when Utah was a territory to the present system HE STATED that much is being done to assist the youth in in our area but there is much to be desired There is need need- for more foster home care group homes more and better trained personnel to handle individual testing procedures There is also great need for fora a good volunteer program and group counseling Mr McDaniels stated there is need for much more to be bedone bedone bedone done to insure proper help for the youth of our area There is a great turnover of probation officers due to low salaries paid TO BECOME a probation officer one must have a bachelors bachelor's bachelors bachelor's bachelors bachelor's bach bach- elors elor's degree in social science and be educated in the field of social work He stated some families cannot handle children They need help and this help should be given by properly trained probation officers counselors and volunteers ONE PROBLEM he especially especially especially espe espe- stressed was that a residential center should be established in Davis county At the present all youth needing needing needing need need- ing special care are now sent to the State Industrial School in Ogden the Training School in American Fork or the Salt Lake Juvenile Detention Home |
