campers and trailers damaged homes and bus bus- finesses This new Centerville Third and Sixth Ward meetinghouse i was damaged There are four pages of wind pictures in this issue of the Clipper Was Mighty Strong Wind Saturday started off as just justa a nice early summer day the last weekend before the end of school MANY residents spent the day cleaning up yards planting planting planting plant plant- ing gardens mowing lawns Others were busy with Skill- Skill Rama 0 at Lagoon THEN LATE in the afternoon afternoon afternoon after after- noon the northwest horizon grew dark black while more to the south some light colored colored colored col col- col- col ored clouds blocked the view of Antelope Island These lighter clouds had a strange flowing effect They looked a little like egg whites with slurps and dashes of inky blackness being mixed in a bowl The black clouds looked more ominous The white clouds proved more de de- de- de THE TilE STORM lurched across West Bountiful and Woods Cross first Golfers dashed for safety pelted by large slushy hail Persons going to BARD saw large boards start soaring soaring soaring soar soar- ing around like flying car car- pets Trees moaned to the east a new direction for them Most of the elements in south Davis County are used to strong east winds but not howling west winds IN JUST moments power lines were lying limp on the ground trees were crashing down on homes in the streets or or yards Windows popped out breaking into minute mis mis- siles sies maiming many Campers and trailers split into pieces Several roofs flew off WHEN THE TilE storm hit south Centerville it snatched part of the roof off the new Centerville Centerville Centerville Center Center- ville cultural hall slamming slamming slamming slam slam- ming sections of it into a ahome ahome ahome home across the street Ward members streamed to clean cleanup cleanup cleanup up the debris mop water from the cultural hall and cover the gaping hole with plywood The roof over the loading dock at the Bountiful post postoffice postoffice postoffice office flipped over the roof of the building dropping a large beam through the roof Wiring was torn up BOUNTIFUL'S city hall lost most of its roofing while a nearby home lost its roof Everywhere there was damage Many store windows on Main Street were smashed pocking the street with glass WHILE SOME stood about aghast at the damage the wind did in just a few moments moments moments mo mo- ments others sprang into action action action ac ac- ac- ac tion The Bountiful Jeep Posse quickly set up a communications center in the Bountiful city hall which had emergency emergency emergency emer emer- gency power po Jeeps whipped about the entire area helping helping helping help help- ing direct traffic as well as serving in many other ways BOUNTIFUL reserve police assisted in manning traffic direction also continuing for many h hours urs Power workers both Bountiful ful and Utah Power Light did a masterful job of restoring restoring restoring ing electric service sometimes sometimes sometimes some some- times in just minutes in a few hours in other areas THE TilE SOUTH Davis Community Community Community Hospital was flooded with injured mostly from glass Several times in recent years the hospital staff has had planned emergencies for train train- ing This time it was all very real Estimates of damage ran high But no one knows yet just how high It will take weeks and then we will not know the full extent of dam dam- age BUT THE great experience with disaster was to see people people people peo peo- rally to help each other In addition to those mentioned mentioned mentioned men men- above the regular police police police po po- po- po lice of course were extremely extreme extreme- ly busy road workers and other city employees went right to work without being called cleaning debris etc Then Sunday morning a South Bountiful Ward Fifth decided the work was more important than holding meetings Meetings were cancelled cancelled cancelled can can- celled and ward members started cleaning up their com com- ALL DURING Saturday night areas were patrolled by the Jeep Posse reserve officers and citizens to prevent prevent prevent pre pre- vent looting and burglary Some cities imposed curfew during the night They were effective IN WOODS Cross perhaps hardest hit in some ways there were four
