Show JV hoopsters lose to Grantsville If you can't put the ball in the hoop, it's awfully tough to win basketball games, as the Park City junior varsity team discovered in a 42-19 loss at Grantsville Dec. 6. The Cowboys were good, though. They shot the eyes out of the bucket 80 . percent in the third 1 quarter and played a zone defense ' that the Miners could not crack. I It would have been a surprise if I the Miners had won because they I faced a much more experienced i team. . "Actually it was an unfair match v up. We had four juniors playing and two of them play with the varsi-' varsi-' ty," said head Cowboy JV Coach Dale Sampson. "We run the 1-3-1 (zone) and that seems to be working I well for us. We also don't shoot beyond 15 feet. If they do they'll be sitting with us on the bench." V Miner head Coach Randy Godfrey played mostly freshmen, with four sophomores seeing part-time action. Park City dug itself into a hole ending end-ing the first quarter behind 12-2 and could never recover. The Miners also had problems scoring points in the fourth quarter as they were 1-11 shooting for a total of 2 points. They were 1-12 in the first quarter. The Miners fared a little better in the second quarter as they went into the locker for halftime down 26-11. They ended the third quarter 36-17. Although it was less than a stellar performance by the Miners, Godfrey did find some positive things in their efforts. "(Randy) Poison hustled all the time the whole game. He always gives 100 percent and he was one of", the consistent players on the floor :, for us," Godfrey said. "He was two-' for-five in shooting and had five rebounds. re-bounds. "(Gary) Boyle also played really well. He was one-for-three in shooting, caused a couple of turnovers turn-overs and was always in the right spot defensively. He really hustled out there," Godfrey added. He credited Jason Schlenske with a good effort as the freshman pulled down seven rebounds and hit a couple cou-ple of buckets. He added that Matt Ott's three rebounds and two-for-three shooting helped the team. ( The experience of the Cowboy team was the difference in the game. They were patient on offense in waiting for the good shot and defensively they capitalized on the height advantage their guards had over their Miner counterparts. "Offensively, we weren't aggressive ag-gressive at all. We basically played the perimeter instead of trying to go ' inside," Godfrey said. "Right now, the kids aren't real sure that the offense of-fense will work the way we have told them it will. The JVs will next play at Lehi Dec. 13 and face South Summit at home ' Dec! 14. |
