Show Water dispute threatens to dry Silver Summit taps by RICK BROUGH Record staff writer Homeowners in the Silver Summit development have been notified that their water may be shut off after this Monday, Dec. 16. The High Valley Water Co. said if it doesn't receive money owed to it by the Atkinson Water Co. (which services Silver Summit) it will shut off the water it supplies to the subdivision. sub-division. Dave Boesch, Silver Summit Homeowners Association president, said residents received the news in a written notice and were also given the same deadline in an owners meeting held last Tuesday night. High Valley has been paid part of the debt owed by Harald Scheckenberger, developer of Silver Summit and president of the Atkinson Atkin-son Water Co. But High Valley of ficials are not satisfied with Scheckenberger's request to wait until Jan. 8 to pay the rest of the money, said Boesch. High Valley has been cooperative with the homeowners, said Boesch, but "they feel they've been backed into a corner" by Scheckenberger. At press time, High Valley president presi-dent Cliff Read was unavailable for comment. Meanwhile, Scheckenberger said High Valley's demand for money was "malicious" and violated the contract between the water companies. com-panies. Scheckenberger said he pays High Valley for 126 shares he holds in the company each sufficient to supply one house. He argues there are two different kinds of shares in that arrangement. Scheckenberger said he has been up to date in paying for the 70 shares which supply water to the 70 existing homes in the subdivision, and therefore High Valley isn't entitled to shut off water to the residents. He said he is in arrears on 56 shares, applying to homes not yet built, and owes High Valley $5,950. Scheckenberger said he will pay that . money by Jan. 8. This is only the latest wrinkle in the water troubles of the Summit County subdivision, near Highway 40 east of Park City. Under local and state government approvals, the subdivision was constructed con-structed with only enough water shares for interior use, although homebuyers were not notified of that condition when they bought the homes and landscaped the yards. Silver Summit had two short breakdowns in the water delivery system last summer and subdivision residents adopted a voluntary rationing ra-tioning system to hold water useage down. |
