Show r - Dec. 8 will see b-ball in threes by Randy lianskat You probably think of December as a month for skiing and snowball throwing, for elves and reindeer, for Jack Frost and Santa. You may be right, but it also is time for round ball, in threes. Say what? Yes, Dec. 8 will be the date of Park City's second three-man basketball tournament at the Treasure Mountain Moun-tain Middle School. Mike Osher of the Park City Recreation Department came up with the idea for three-man b-ball in Park City, and has patterned the event after a similar one in Laguna Beach, California. The Laguna tournament, Osher said, has become so popular that it's drawn the likes of Wilt Chamberlain out of retirement to hit the beachside courts. The Park City toumey will have only one division, Osher said, open to anyone, from anywhere. Hot shots of all ages are welcome. He said registration began at the recreation department this week, with the event I open to the first 20 teams which sign up. The cost is $5person,. or $15teani. The rules are basically the same as those for a half-court pick-up game of basketball, he said, including make it take it (the team which scores gets the ball back again at half court). Games will be won by the first team to make 13 baskets, winning by a margin of at least two. The tourney is double elimination. Players will call their own fouls, as in street basketball. Osher said he will be on hand to rule on controversial plays. The three-second three-second rule will be in effect to keep offensive players from camping out under the basket, and will be called by the players themselves. Osher said any team that is more than 10 minutes late for its game will forfeit. Games will start around 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, and will end at about 3 p.m. Cal1 'he recreation department for more i.iformation. I |
