Show An invisible track adds challenge to Powder Mountain race by Nan Chalat "On a clear day the Powder Mountain track offers a spectacular view, but when the wind blows that ridge is terrible," race coordinator for the final race of the Wasatch Citizens Series, which was held at Powder Mountain last Saturday, couldn't have been worse. "At times I couldn't even see the track," said competitor Christoph Schork. But his instincts must have led him in the right direction: he won first place in his category (men ages 19-34) by skiing 15 kilometers in 52.58 minutes. Fortunately, the distances required requir-ed at Powder Mountain were not as great as in some of the previous events in the series. And without the distraction of a view, the competitors had only the cold wind and finishing on their minds. The fastest time of the day went to Sverre Planke, who won the grand prize of the rare a mp fo Haw.iii for two. Planke's time was 45.54 for 15 kilometers. Drew Baniey was second with a time of 47 minutes and Ken McCarthy was third (48.59). In the men's 35-49-year-old division, and Gibson won first place with a time of 46.07, missing the Hawaii trip by only 13 seconds. Hanscom earned second place in the division with a time of 51.12 minutes. Ed Masters followed Schork in the men's 19-34-year-old class with a lime of 56.15. Lee Shea was third finishing in 56.30. Kathy McCarthy steeled herself against the blowing snow to finish first in the women's expert division. She skied the 15 kilometers in 61.03. Marie Swartz was second with a time of 62.56. Jean Lown was third (63.11) and Jeri Sims was fourth (64.32). There were only two competitors in the women's 19-34 year-old-category, Roxanne Toly and Madonna Harris Tolv edtrert Harris nut of first with a time of 59.70 to Harris's 60.42. In the 35-49-year-old women's wo-men's division which also raced 15 kilometers, Karen Korfanta came out ahead with a time of 68.58. Marsha Groth was second (79.21) and Carol Louder was third (83.54). Ellen Seeley, the lone competitor in the women's over-50-year-old bracket, completed seven kilometers in ;i).25. Ted Sundquist topped the corresponding corres-ponding men's division. He skied 15 kilometers in 77.13. Lars Olavson was second (77.59) and B.K. Seeley was third (80.30). Jesse Glidden led the 14 to 18-year-old boys' division. His time on the seven kilometer loop was 28.28. In the meantime, Chris Jorgenson topped the under 13 year olds with a time of 35.34 for the seven kilometers. Greg Hanscom was second (38.47). |
