Show McDonald's chain to open r franchise at Kimball Junction by CHRISTOPHER SMART Record staff writer r v ' r . The golden arches of McDonald's hamburger chain are coming to Kimball Junction, according to Summit Sum-mit County developer Hy Saunders. McDonald's recently signed a contract con-tract with Saunders after more than . a year of surveys and study on the site, the developer said. McDonald's . will break ground next spring. Saunders said McDonald's has projected sales of $1.2 million during its first year of operation. The restaurant will be at the intersection of Utah Highway 224 and Landmark Drive, near the Landmark Inn and the Interstate 80 offramp. "It will be a great service to the ; area," Saunders said. But the arrival of McDonald's may signal more than construction . of a fast-food restaurant, he said. The decision by a national restaurant to locate at Kimball Junction indicates that the local economy will support business here. Saunders said he expects more commercial com-mercial development to follow McDonald's and, in turn, more residential construction to occur. Saunders said he has been ' negotiating with two grocery store chains interested in opening stores at Kimball Junction. In addition, Holy Ho-ly Cross Hospital plans a medical facility near the junction. When McDonald's breaks ground, it will be a signal to bankers and lending len-ding institutions that the Kimball . JunctionPark City area is viable, Saunders said. "It changes bankers' ideas. If bankers feel that Park City is down right now, they are looking at it short term. They should look at long term." Development in the Kimball Junction Junc-tion area is only possible because services, such as culinary water and sewer, are available, Saunders said. He said he has been working on the , development of those services for about seven years. "We are getting excited about a return on our investment," he said. |
