The second-I second-I place teams, Doc's and Jan's, overpowered op-I op-I ponents and set the stage for . a three-team pennant race. I In a battle to climb out of the second division, the amazing I Alamo Bums raked the Snow I Pigs. 1 In limited women's soft-I soft-I ball action this week, the Thrillseekers crushed The Club and the Sneakers shut-out shut-out Prospector Sirloin. Just I Arnie's didn't see any action I and remains in first place, I while Sneakers and the I Thrillseekers battle it out for ' second. Men's Softball Doc's Club 16, Park Meadows 12 A strong Doc's Club hacked down the Country Club boys after a first inning insurrection by the Park Meadows squad in the early . game Sunday. A first-inning homer by Park Meadows' Scott Allen boosted them to a 5-1 lead. Then Doc's came back in the second to ravage the Country Club for seven runs as the reigning champs batted around. The Country Club got hot again in the fourth, but a fifth-inning double by Gary Avise doused the smouldering smoulder-ing Meadows team as Doc's came in for four more. Doc's now sits poised for the showdown with the Coconuts for first place. Simms. Janeaux's goes to 2 and 7 on the season; the Square gets knocked to 6 and 3. Hat Store 18, End Run 10 The Hat Store came back Sunday to halt the End Run, 19-10. The Hat Store was coming off a Wednesday defeat at the hands of Jan's. The Hat Store's John Nirva lead off the game with a home run and it was all downhill from there as the Store romped for seven runs in the first inning. The Hat Store slammed and ran for seven more in the third with a little help from End Run errors. The Run scrambled in the late innings but the hole was too deep and the Hat Store cruised to victory. Alamo Bums 23, Snow Pigs 16 With momentum from last week's 5th inning miracle against the Hat Store, the Alamo Bums beat back the Snow Pigs in the late game Sunday, 23-16. The slug fest was anything but a defensive battle. Finally Final-ly the Bums outlasted the Pigs when a sixth inning explosion ex-plosion garnered six runs on two walks and a triple by Bud Macchia. The Bum defense settled in to hold the Pig counter-offensive. The teams had identical records going into the game. Now the Bums boast a 4 and 5 mark, while the Pigs slip to . 3 and 6. Jan's Mountain Outfitters 28, Stein's 11 Stein's came alive and scored an incredible nine runs in the fourth inning Sunday. But the burst of energy was not enough to hold off Jan's. Jan's, otherwise known as the Mountain Men, is spoiling spoil-ing to take on Doc's and the Coconuts for first place. Sunday, however, they seemed content to beat the stuffings out of Stein's, who is looking for its first win. If they could just explode more often. The statistics on Jan's 28 runs are too numerous to list, although they slugged, slid, , , and stole as though they doubted victory. Jan's Mountain Outfitters 14. Prospector Square 7 In the Tuesday night game, Jan's held Prospector Square at bay to capture a 14-7 win. The Square couldn't get anything going until it was too late, and then it wasn't enough. , The last inning surges by the Prospector : bunch on a sleepy Jan's weren't enough to cover a final rally by the Mountain .' Men, who took four more in the sixth on the bat of Randy Hanskat, who homered. ; Women's Softball : Thrillseekers 26, The Club 2 The Thrillseekers punished pun-ished The Club Monday, 26-2, in women's Softball. The first inning bombshell saw the Seekers strafe The Club for 16 runs while they batted through the line-up, not once, but twice. Trine Jensen Lappe rapped a triple for the Seekers in the opening barrage that sent The Club-ettes Club-ettes diving for foxholes. The Club defense then took cover, allowing only 10 more runs through five innings, after which the white flags came out. Somehow, The Club should schedule their games before happy hour but yet late enough in the day to assemble the entire squad. Sneakers 10, Prospector Sirloin 0 The Sneakers' big "D" defense stopped an indifferent indif-ferent Prospector Sirloin cold in the late game Monday. The defensive battle shaped up early and the Sirloin held until Sneakers uncorked for three in the third on a two-bagger by Maggie Reno. The Sneakers got a little help from three Sirloin errors that inning. Later, the Sirloin defense collapsed of its own weight. The Sneaks ran the bases and sacrificed runners in good, scrappy action the rest of the way. The' Sneaks defense wouldn't give an inch and the Sirloin went down without a struggle at .10-0." . i '(:, Jan's Mountain Outfitters 13, Hat Store 11 A battling Hat Store club fell short in extra innings to a steady Jan's Mountain Outfitters Out-fitters squad, 13-11, in a thriller Wednesday, July 17. The Hat Store came out of nowhere in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on balanced hitting to force the heady Mountain Men into a Mexican Mexi-can stand-off. After regula- tion play the score stood 10 apiece. The eighth inning was a defensive duel, but when the ninth came up and the chips were down, Jan's boys clubbed in three runs with a little help from two walks. The Mountain boys hold on to the cat-bird seat with only one in the loss column while the Hat Store keeps slipping. Coconuts 23, Stein's Lodge 5 In a mercy killing in the late game Wednesday the 17th, the Park Hotel Coconuts Coco-nuts put Stein's away in five innings. In the first inning, Stein's jumped out for a quick 2-0 lead, until the league-leading Nuts came to bat. Suddenly the score was 14-2. As expected, the Coconuts sent Stein's home to the lodge early. ; The Coconuts hold on to , first and..; you guessed it, Stein's digs in for winter;1 Coconuts 21, Scrooge's 5 The Park Hotel Coconuts ripped the hide off the softball and Scrooge's Sunday, Sun-day, in their usual manner, 21-5. The Nuts held it down until the second inning when they went on safari and bagged nine runs, including two homers in the same inning by Ross Wilson. That seemed to be enough for Scrooge's who weren't into big game that day. After a two-inning rest, the Nuts went head-hunting again and brought Scrooge's back on a spit. The Nuts are obviously warming up for Doc's on the 20th. Janeaux's 19, Prospector Square 11 The all-new Janeaux's, in a surprising metamorphosis, whipped Prospector Square, 19-11 Sunday. Will wonders never cease? Janeaux's came out of the blocks strong and ripped the Square for five runs in the first inning on solid hitting from the front of the batting order. A dazed Prospector' Square team was just finding the handles when Janeaux's kicked in the warp drive in the third inning, blasting the Square for 10 runs.
