It's finally getting warm enough to bare our toes to the actual outdoors and to confidently toss lettuce and radish seeds out into the garden. There are glacier lillies on the hillsides and the birds have nested down and become suspiciously quiet. In a week or two their new offspring will be demanding breakfast and their noisy chirruping ' will fill the trees again. In the meantime, we can get back to the business of reading tee-shirts. In fact, nowhere is Park City's reputation as a melting pot more evident than on Main Street in tee-shirt weather. There are University tee-shirts- from seaboard to seaboard, resort hoppers bear logos from around the world, and, of course, there are also 'specialty shirts. ' Reading- -a person 's t-ec- -shirt gives you a distinct -.advantage, it's a handy . conversation piece and a safe way to seek out allies. Wearing a team tee-shirt in public lets people know -where you stand right off the bat. So it came to pass that school colors became fashionable fas-hionable street-yvear. The approach at first was subtle just the name of a school and the emblem, or the name of a particular cafe's bowling league and the year. Enough to let the other guy know you were from Hoboken and not to be messed with. Newcomers in Park City found that wearing hometown tee-shirts helped them locate long lost relatives rela-tives who had also drifted into Utah. Pretty soon though, native Parkites took to making up their own shirts so they could recognize each other from the transients. Eventually, the dictates of tee-shirt fashion loosened up "--ymi h-o fott-ger had ttrbe-vrr ' a team .to' earn a tee-shirt. Custom tee-shirt shops started star-ted offering specialty tees, many printed to order. . Of course, the world of advertising was quick to realize the advertising potential poten-tial of these walking billboards bill-boards and that is when the season of the tee-shirt really blossomed. This year it is no holds barred political slogans, jokes, literary references, refer-ences, prestigious races and regattas, all are emblazoned on custom shirts right up front. Once a tee-shirt only told you where a person went to high school, whether he was JV or Varsity, football or hockey or where he went on last summer's vacation. Now, you don 't have to be a sociologist to discern a whole lot more. The question is does a Park City rugby player dare wear his team tee-shirt in mixed companv? NC |
