Show Japanese Skiers Lead Local Spring Classic PAH HtWhU ' " 'I ; (A f; , sit i v ' Mr--.-., v ' X ( , 1 I r' J1 i A. v A - 4. 1 Men skiers from Japan and Alaska held the first round lead of the Park City Spring Classic, which began here Monday and will run through Wednesday. Dhtaka Hiroaki and Sasada Atsushi, representing Japan, captured the top two spots in the men's Giant Slalom competition held Monday on the Ladies GS run, and two Alaskan skiers, Garrett Walker and Peter Grossman, Gross-man, were, respectively, third and fourth. Park City skiers did surprisingly surprising-ly well in Monday's competition with talented Roxanne Toly claiming eighth place in the women's division of the tough event. Karri Hays of Park City finished 12th in the women's competition and Renee Farwig was 18th. Lelani Soares, Caroline Wilson, Laura Gaylord, Jody Robinson and Susie Robinson skied impressively, claiming places 21st through 25th, respectively. respec-tively. Alana Soares came in 27th. Maria Marich of Sun Valley held the lead in the ladies' competition Monday over Sara Duff of the Central Division. Doni Waldman, formerly of Park City, who now races for Sun Valley, skied magnificently, taking third place in the Giant Slalom. Park City Men racer Jordan Swenson placed sixteenth and Louie Leatham was eighteenth. Rip Griffith placed 29th and Erick Hayes 32nd. Steve Evans was 37th after the first day of competition, with Robert Ayers, Peter Donner, McKay Edwards and Brian Hollander placing 39th through 42nd. Marko Alvarez placed 63rd. The Park City Spring Classic is a nationally sanctioned race where top young racers compete for FIS points, which determine their standings in national and international competition. FIS points are also the guidelines by which skiers are picked for the United States Ski Team.
