Show Ski Tip of the Week Steer Your Way to Stem Christies is that the knees must remain sufficiently flexed to enable you to steer the skis properly. By steering I mean a forward pressure toward the tip of the ski and in the direction of the turn. "You see if you keep your knees in a locked position, no forward pressure is being applied to your tips and steering becomes impossible. "To try this maneuver, choose a relatively flat, smooth intermediate terrain like Claim Jumper, Vary the radius of the turn to match the steepness of the terrain. In steep areas do wider radius turns and smaller ones 0,1 flatter slopes. Here's how: This week's Ski Tip is forwarded by Park City Resort's Gary Cole, a "white pin instructor certified in the Pacific NW division. Cary's in his first year at the Resort having moved from Washington's Mt. Baker ski area. He favors .an action approach to instruction tries to get his pupils excited from the start about learning "so they'll ski a lot and have fun doing it." 'Steering to learn stemmi ng is a pre stem Christie maneuver aimed at beginning to intermediate inter-mediate skiers at the stage where they just need lots of practice and plenty of 'mileage'. " It's designed to aid people who would head for runs like Claim Jumper or the Three Kings area. 'Tt involves basically learning how to slip your skis sideways and hopefully feel comfortable comfort-able in doinsi it. " It' s des i gned to aid people who would head for runs like Claim Jumper or the Three Kings area. "The action is a steering type turn for skiing primarily in the fall-line that ends in a rounded side-slip position with your skis parallel. paral-lel. "This turn is helpful in reinforcing weight transfer to the outside ski and closing the skis into a forward side-slip. "The single most important factor in the turn Just. I - ,.7 , I ... r ff I . As you do so, sink slightly over the skis to round out the forward slide-slip." "As your skis enter the fcll-line, shift your weight completely to the outside ski with forward for-ward pressure of the right knee and slight upper body tilt over the right ski." "From the traverse position push your skis apart at the tails into the basic wedge position and begin to shift your weight to the outside ski." |
