Show DEATH OF APOSTLE A dwoodruff salt lake city utah june 21 while returning home from the funeral 0 his wife in the city 0 mexico apostle abraham owen woodruff of the mormon church died of smallpox at el paso tex baat night mrs woodruff died of smallpox about two weeks ago her husband bad hurried to the mexican capital when informed of his cifes illness and was with her to the end believing full precautions had been taken to prevent his contracting tr the disease he started tor his home in salt lake he was ill when he arrived at el paso about ten days ago and stopped there to recuperate A physician pronounced bis case one of typhoid and he was given treatment for typhoid when it developed that he had smallpox he was at once removed to the isolation hospital at el paso his case did not appear to be a severe one and there was every indication that he would soon recover he ate a hearty breakfast yesterday morning and was thought to have reached the convalescent stage when he suddenly became worse and passed away last night roe direct cause of death being heart failure news of abe death reached salt lake last night in the form of a telegram to president john R winder from A W ivins president of the mexican mission the interment will in all probability be in el paso from the nature of the disease that produce death apostle woodruff leaves four children three daughters and eon all under 6 years of age the youngest child an antof 5 months is with its grandmother mrs emma smith woodruff in salt lake and the other three children are in colonga Col onla juarez mexico in charge of servants apostle woodruff was a son of the late president allford woodruff and was born in salt lake county nov 23 1872 bis mother being mrs emma smith hla boyhood was passed on the farm where he was born and after finishing the district schools he attended the latter day saints college in salt lake at the age of 18 he became a collector for a salt lake bank and was later promoted to the position of assistant bookkeeper he was called on a mission for the mormon church in 1893 and was assigned to frankfort on the maln in the german mission within a year he was made president of the dresden branch and later was called to the presidency of the berlin conference where he for a year before returning home in 1896 on june 30 of that year he was married to miss helen may winters whose death preceded his own by two weeks he was ordained ten apostle oct 7 1896 by hla father since that time he has been engaged wholly in church en his chief labor has been the I 1 mormon colonization of the big horn country |
