Show OPERATING ASPHALT PLANT Yesterday the P J. Moran Construction Construc-tion company begun the operation of the asphalt plant on U'est Twenty-fourth Twenty-fourth street, and. during tho day. a large number of loads of binder for the asphalt pavement were mixed and hauled to North Washington avenue. The machinery was n little stiff yesterday yes-terday because of the fact that H has been inactive since tn finishing of the palng In the city last winter, but It wuj stated by the foreman last night that tho plant will be working full capacity today. About twenty-five men and a half dozen teams are employed in handling the product of the plant. Tho binder consists of coarso gravel and hot asphaltnm mixed, and Is placed plac-ed upon the concrete layer of six Inches. a!out 2 Inches deep. On top. of this binder will be placed two Inch-en Inch-en of asphaltnm Nearly a block of binder was laid on Washington avenue aven-ue yesterday, beginning at the river bridge and working toward the center of the city, nnd It Is stated by tho men In charge of the work that If the weather continues favorable, the entire en-tire west side of the avenue, between Twenty-second street and 'be river bridge can be laid with the binder during the week. This done, the layinsr of the asphalt will begin with d'.spaich It is thought that, wilhln tho next few days the obstructions to traffic on the aven ue can be cleared away for teams and automobiles. In case of fire, says the -foreman, the highway will be thrown opn to the fire department and the teams will bo permltttod to pass ever the concrete binder, where it Is hard enough to hold up the fire nppaia'us. The laying of concrete on Hudson Hud-son avenue will he completed this afternoon aft-ernoon nnd the force of teams will be placed on the east side of the nTth end of the paving district of Washing ton avenue, the plan now being to finish tho concrete work within the next few days Every man and team that can be conveniently handled Is being put to work on the street paving. |
