Show NORTHWESTERN UNO I llli IDAHO Tho New York Commercial Is authority au-thority for tho statement that the Chicago Chi-cago & Northwestern will extend from Lander, Wyo., to a connection with the Oregon Short Line at Foea-tello. Foea-tello. The latter road will be usd fr tbo extension of the Northwestern Northwest-ern to Portland and Pugot Sound. It being agreed that the big Chicago system will not extend beyond Poca-tello. Poca-tello. It will be recalled that last week Marvin Hughltt, president of the Chicago Chi-cago & Northwestern, was elected a director of the Oregon Short Line in place of P. A. Valentine, the Armour man of Chicago. This may be a significant sig-nificant fact in the latest announcement announce-ment of the New York paper, which is usually reliable on all railroad news. A few years ago tho Chicago & Northwestern held first place lu what can lie designated as the Chicago group of railroads J. J. Hill, by combining the Purling-t..ii Purling-t..ii with the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern, made that svstem, the Burlington, the first in the group. I5y connections it reaches from tho Gulf Mexico to Puget Sound and Is vtlll expanding, with the line as near Salt Lake and Pocalello as that of tho Northwestern. The Chicago. Milwaukee & St. Paul dropped to fourth place, but spurred on by Its rivals' activity, it secured Rockefeller and Amsterdam capital with which to build tho Puget Sound road, and thus it has its own lino direct from Chicago to Seattle and Its freight tonnage has boon something some-thing tremendous. The Northwestern, therefore, dropped drop-ped from Its proud position as first of the group to a location away down on the list; that Is. in relation to tho Pacific toast and Oriental traffic. The Santa Fe, Northern Pacific, Great Northern. Burlington and the Milwaukee have protected their Pacific Pa-cific coat defenses for all time, and it is absolutely neccssarv for the Northwestern to get into direct competition com-petition At Omaha It Is the Union Pacific connection, but the Union Pacific Pa-cific dare not give it too much preference, pref-erence, as that would moan the other oth-er Denver or Omaha line kicking over the Union Pacific traces. The distance from l-ander to Poca-tello Poca-tello is but 207 miles. |
