Show LOVING CUP FOR PRINCIPAL CROSS As a tribute of affectionate regard In which he is held by the members of the Ogden high school football team, champions of Utah, Principal .. O. Cross, was presented with a silver loving cup at a banquet given to the football team by Stephen Kcogh, an alumnus, Friday night. The banquet was held at the High school in tho bauquel hall of the domestic science department. Thirty guests were present. pres-ent. After the banquet the guests attended at-tended tho light opera, ' Erminle", at the Ogden theatre The loving cup will be engrayed as follows:' "0. H. S. Football team, Champions, 1910. Presented to Principal J. O. Cross." This Inscription will be followed fol-lowed by the names of Coach Brown, Student manager Ed. Smith and those of the team. Principal Cross was the toastmas-ter toastmas-ter and during the courses, odd happenings hap-penings of the various games of the season were discussed by the members of the team and many humorous situations situa-tions recalled. Plans for the coming athletic events were outlined and a movement was started for a new gymnasium. gym-nasium. Walter Smyth was elected as the captain of the 1911 team and Ed. Smith was elected as manager. In brief responses both men told of the plana for next year and the hopes and ambitions of the team. Superintendent John M. Mills ppoke of the physical education of mankind as the basis on which all great nations builder and of the absolutely necessity of athletics as a part of the education of students. Beginning with the games of the ancient Greeks, Superintendent Superin-tendent Mills traced the growth of physical education up through the year6 from that time and called attention at-tention to the spirit engendered by tho various sports indulged in. Then Coach Brown was called upon. His words were brief and to the point spoken feelingly, yet roughly of the team and the traditions of the school. In conclusion he presented the loving cup to Principal Cross as a tribute of the loyalty and esteem in which the team held the principal. Tbo spirit spir-it behind the gift and the manner, time and place, in which the gift was presented, comlu? as It did as a com plete surprise, quite overcame Principal Prin-cipal Cross. For some moments ho was unable to reply. Stephen Keogh told of the struggles of former teams, of tho interest with which the presont term was watched by the alumni and of the great Joy when Ogden High won the state championship cham-pionship He was followed by C. A. Magnlre who devoted his remarks to tho physical education of the American Ameri-can student In the puollc schools. In acknowledging the gift of the loving cup, Principal Cross, in a voice husky with cmo:lon, thanked the members mem-bers of the team, praised them for the work they had done both in the physical and tho Intellectual line and then brlelly outlined the plans for the future.
