Governors Govern-ors of states are taking unusual interest inter-est this year In tho Eighteenth National Na-tional Irrigation congress, Pueblo, Soptember 26 30. 1910. This is probably because of the remarkable re-markable Interest In development work generally, all over the land, and the "back-to-the-farm"' movement, with the origin of the "model homes" campaign In recent months. Governor Hughes of New York has taken a great interest ln tho movement move-ment and so has his commissioner of agriculture, Raymond A. Pearson. Also, thero has recently been Incorporated Incor-porated in New York the Agricultural Improvement Association of New-York, New-York, whose president Is W. C. Brown, president of the New York Central railroad. Writing lo Secretary Secre-tary Hooker of tho Eighteenth National Na-tional Irrigation congress, Commissioner Commis-sioner Pearson say: "Our state department of agriculture agricul-ture Is also doing much work In connection con-nection with arousing interest in tho cheap farms of New York nnd encouraging en-couraging persons lo purchase and make good use of these farms. I realize that many of our problems in the east are the same as the agricultural agricul-tural problems In tho west, and we should be glad if we could cooperate cooper-ate with you in advaQtagelously dealing deal-ing with these problems." Governor W. F. Frear of Hawaii says: "I regret that It will be impossible for me to attend the congress thl year. I hope, however, to be able to appoint veveral delegates to it, anJ among others the superintendent of public works, who Is also commissioner commission-er of public lands of the territory, and under whom hydraulic topographic, topograph-ic, and other work in the territory relating to subjects if Interest In the congress Is conducted." Governor Augustus E. Willson of Kentucky says he la trying to get up a delegation from his state, nnd his taken the matter up actively with the press of the state Governor Vessey of South Dakota writes that he is Just now preparing will soon submit Its name?. Other governors are i-onstantly sending In their lists of appoint-ments appoint-ments or writing friendly letters expressing ex-pressing their great Intereit In the vork of tho congress. It Is hoped that there may again b-a b-a governors' day, that at Spokane last vcar having proved so success-ful. success-ful. " |
