Show In Number of Insane Attributed to Increased Increas-ed Longevity New York, Aug 22 Dr. Albert W. Ferris, president of the New York lunacy commission, thinks that one of the chief causes of the lncreassd number of insane in the United States is to be found in the increased longevity longe-vity of the race. In a report, just made public here, he says: "Attention has been drawn to the fact that the race Is longer-lled. In 1840 the average age at death was about 23 years. "At 1S0O the average age increased to 34.5 years, thus bringing more people peo-ple into the third decade of life, which Is the most fruitful decade of insanity. The number of insane properly prop-erly to be expected in 1900. deduced from this basis of deaths and age distribution dis-tribution in JS40. Is 27.8 per cunt greater than in 1840. "Thus do the refinements of niedl-tlne, niedl-tlne, so unfortunately for the rac and so satisfactorily for the individual, prop up and fortify young people with feeble constitutions, until they can mcm'i tli s aiding Id the service of the unfit and augmenting the number of insane patients."" f |
