Show I THE "BARGEES" OF THE FRENCH RIVERS. The life on the Innumerable barges that traverse the rivers and canals of France, carrying cargoes of any kind of material imperishable within a month, is interesting and fascinating. fascinat-ing. Each bargo represents a private pri-vate rewldence, inhabited by the owner own-er or navigator, his wife, one or more children, and often a dog and a cat. An Illustrated article ln the August Popular Mechanics says: "The speed of the passage depends on whether the barges are towed by tugs, drawn by horses, or by tbe bargees bar-gees themselves, which often occurs on short narrow canHls. Barge traffic Is the cheapest form of water transportation, trans-portation, although slow, and ninny millions tons of cargo are carried by them annually. On the larger waterways water-ways as mny as 1.1 or 15 barges, sometimes more, are slowly towed along by puffy little tugs." |
