Aug. 21 Attention has been called to an error in the history of the famous Wirublo-don Wirublo-don Cup which is sht for annually j under the auspices of tho National Rifle Association of America In a flory giving a sketch of how this cup was presented to the National RIlo Ass-eolation of Great Biltuln, It was xrated that tho cup was presented lo the association by Major Henry Fulton Ful-ton of England. Mr. II. L. Bridgman, f the Brooklyn Stunrlard Union, who tak-s an active interest !n rlfl? practice and other ' out -door sports, ns well as in Arctic explorations, cnught what he thought was an error ' rnd communicated with General George W. Windgatc, of New York, popularly known as the "Father of Rifle Practice" General Wiiulgate replied as follows; "Major Henry Eultoti was a native American and a member of tho First International Rifle Team of the United Unit-ed States, of which I wns captain I When tl,iit team went abroad there . was no match at Wimble.-ion in which It was entitled to compete as a team, j The British National Rifle aasotla- ) Hon presented the cup known as Tbe Wimbledon Cup to be shot for first by the American team at Wimbledon Wim-bledon and afterwards to bo brought back to this country and compoted tor annually under the nutces of the National Rifle Association of America. Major Fulton shot for it at Wimbledon and won it and since that time It has been competed for at the matches of the National Rifle Asso elation of America. Major Fulton was the men who made the highest Bcore in the first international match which broke all previous records. He dlod a number of year ago." |
