Show AEROPLANE FLIGHT MADE AMERICAN WAR VESSEL Washington. Nov. 11 The proposed aeroplane flight by Eugene Ely of San Francisco, from the deck of a naval nav-al vessel, will be etbserved by the navy department as an unusual test of the value of the heavler-than-air machine for usages of naval warfare. This announcement was made today at the navy department, together with details of the proposed test. The jvolnt which will be ' determined will le the practicability of launchiug an airship from a scout cruiser at sea. The trial will be made on the scout emlser Birmingham by Ely in a Cur-tlss Cur-tlss biplane The machine will be placed on the vessel in Hampton Roads and taken up Chesapeake bay for quite a distance where the air-ehlp air-ehlp will be sent away. The president previously has refused re-fused permission to aviators for tho use of naval vessels for airship test, but It is said at the navy department tbat there will be a government trial to determine the war usefulness of the airship. |
