Show VICE-PRESIDENT ON WITNESS STAND CHICAGO, Sept. 1. Testimony relative rel-ative to operatlug cost an-! revenue of the Rock Inland Railway company occupied the attention of the examiners exami-ners today Id the hearing of the freight rates dispute between tho railroads, which seek an increased rate on certain commodities, and thj shippers, who opposo the advance. Vice President F. O. Melcher of tho Rock Island occupied the Brand throughout the morning, and several clashes between the witnesses and counsel for the shippers occurred. The afternoon session was taken up with the introduction of statistics relating re-lating to tho financial condition of the road and the cost of operation. Tho statistics were introduced by Frank Nay, comptroller of the railroad. rail-road. Before Nay was sworn, Attorney K. J. Norton, for tho Santa Fe, filed with the examiners a formal protest against what he termed "statement which have been sent out from Washington Wash-ington as proceeding from the Interstate Inter-state commerce commission sine the contest over the tariffs began, which have been uniformly misleading, narrow nar-row and unfair to the carriers."
