Show STRONG HOPE OF CURING CANCER ALBANY, N. Y.. Feb. 13. A strong hope of curing cancer, or at least greatly ameliorating tho suffering of concer patleuta by means of innocula-tlou innocula-tlou is held out In the report of Henry Gaylurd, director of the cancer laboratory labora-tory of the state department of health at buffalo. This hope Is based on extended experimentation In tho lat year In the Innovation of various animals, mainly rats, with the cancer can-cer virus. ' It appears,' nays the report, "that wlmro the reslscenco of the animal is not sufficiently awakened by one In-noculatlon In-noculatlon of the tumor, this resistance resis-tance can be heightened by repeated doseB und, In a considerable proportion propor-tion of cases, Immunity can be raised to ft point that will bring about a cure. It I9 nt-edless to point out that this process of repeated vaccination, vhtch has cured In tho proportion of 2.j to 40 In rats, might well be applied to those cases of lato rancor In human beings in which surgery has nothing to offer and tho outlook Is hopeless. "As we strongly urged the legislature legisla-ture in previous reports, the time has come when we should begin the experimentation ex-perimentation with human beings To do sn, it Is necessary that a number num-ber of patients should be maintained for this purpose. Funds sufficient to enable us to maintain ten patients Is the least amount that can be of value if this work Is to be undertaken." Other investigations conducted by the laboratory have had to do with tho prevnlenco of many forms of cancer can-cer in fish and the possibility of infection infec-tion by human beings. It has been found that cancer of the thyroid is of frequent occurrence in fl.h of tho trout family. "It is a remarkable coincidence" says tho report, "that tho area of the United States which Includes the greatest concentration of human cancer can-cer caBos, Ir almost Identical with tho area through which the various members mem-bers of tho trout family are distributed." distri-buted." Statistics are given to show that cancer continues to lncreaso. Tho report re-port says that In the United States It has increased from nine per 100,000 population in 1850 to 43 In 1900, an average of about 65 to 1901 and nn average of more than 70 in 1906. |
