SURVIVE FIGHT Despite c onflicting i reports to the effect that .lobn Holmes, the man whose throat was cut In a drunken brawl Tuesday nlRht, bad succumbed to his terrible Injuries, latest reports from the hospital state that thf man has &n even chance .for recovering. Dr. J. S. Cordon and City Physician Anna M. Rles, who attended Holmes .before taking him to the hospital, and undoubtedly saved the man's life with their efficient surgery, stated . yesterday yester-day that many of the arteries in Holmes' neck were completely severed, sev-ered, and that It was llttlo less than a miracle that ho .survived Various stories of eye-witnesses to the fight woro told yesterday to officers offi-cers who were Investigating the affair In the hopes of apprehending the man's assailants. It was asserted that Holmes was attacked by three other toughs at the same time, one of whom drew a revolver revol-ver and struck him over the head with It, while one with a knife and another with a broken beer bottle assisted as-sisted In the attack. Some of the- women In the neighborhood neigh-borhood who witnessed the fight stated that two of the men were mingling ming-ling with the crowd which gathered after the trouble for nearly half an hour, bunting up their hats and waeh-Ing waeh-Ing the blood from their own wounds. One of the assailants with his own face slashed from the left eye to near the point of the Jaw approached one of the houses and asked to be allowed to wash bis face. The privilege was denied him. and when asked If he had done any of the cutting he replied re-plied that he had done all of it, and that he hoped the would die." It Is stated that this gang nf toughs have been frequenting the neighborhood neighbor-hood mentioned for some time past, and that drunken brawls, cnn-rushlng and general disturbances have been nightly occurrences. |
