Show jCAME HEAR BEING A RACE RIOT An Incident ' that might have terminated in a race riot, occurred at the viaduct on lower Twenty-fourth street yesterday at noon. Between 12 cn.l 1 o'clock the structural and iron vrorkors on the viaduct gathered to-gei-ber to have their pictures taken. The men had stationed themselves upon the trestle work of tho viaduct for the photographer to take their picture. pic-ture. No sooner had the men been placed in tho position desired than a couple of Greeks, truckmen at tho freight house, climbed to prominent places with the Iron workers. An exception was taken to their presence, and they were ordered down. They reluctantly complied with the order, but immedt-aely immedt-aely returned to their desired positions, posi-tions, whereupon the workmen, Americans, Ameri-cans, became somewhat indignant and unceremoniously removed them. One of the Greeks, being exasperated exasperat-ed over the sudden expulsion, picked up a cobblestone and hurled it Into tho crowd of Americans assembled upon the huge girders, barely missing the beads of eome of the men. The Americans, however, kept their tempers temp-ers until tho act of taking the picture had been completed, when they came c'own from the scaffolding iu a body. That they were enraged goes without saying. No sooner had they alighted upon the ground than a rough-and-tumble light ensued between thorn and the foreigners. There were about lour of the Greeks and other foreigners to ono of the Americans, but within a very short time the foreign clement was on the run, a number ol the Greeks getting away with black eyes and swelled heads. One . of the Greeks drew a largo dirk in a threatening manner, but ho was quickly disarmed by one of the iron workers and given a ewlft punch in the Jaw for his pains. The troubled atmosphere was soon cleared but the foreigners moved mov-ed away with expressions of indignation in-dignation and contempt that may burse forth, with a vehemence that may cause moro serious trouble. No arrests kwere made and eye witnesses wit-nesses of the affair arc pleased that a race riot was not brought about. |
