In the spring of 1907 a planting sfation was established on, the Pocatello National forest for th purpose of reforesting tho slopes ot tho streams which supply the city ol Pocatello. The first trees grown then will bo ready for field planting next year. The present annual capacity of this nursery is 1,000,000 plants. Besides Be-sides the planting of trees, experiments experi-ments aro being conducted on a number num-ber of forests to determine the poeai-blllty poeai-blllty of reforesting by direct seeding. In case these experiments prove successful suc-cessful they will hold out the hope of accomplishing results more nearly commenisurato with tho needs. PLANTING OF NEW i FORESTS AID TO NATURE IN RESTORING MOUNTAIN FORESTS. Two Government Nurseries, Near Salt Lake and at Pocatello Are Growing Young Trees. I Those forests which contain the largest larg-est supply of merchantable timber at present are almost without exception remote from settlement, and transportation transpor-tation facilities arc poor or wanting, while the more accessible ones In tho center of the district, especially those lying in the Wasatch mountains, contain' con-tain' comparatively little timber. Tho necessity of taking steps to plant up the more Important watersheds has been realized for several' years past In the summer of 1905, careful studies i were made which resulted In definite action along the lines of forest planting. plant-ing. At that time a nursery was started start-ed In Big Cottonwood canyon on the Wasatch National forest, 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.
