Chief of Police Drowning, Detective Detec-tive Pender and Special omcer Robert Burko made a very clever capture ot crooks yesterday afternoon. According Accord-ing to tho statements of tho oIMccrs. the men arrested belong to a band ot all-round hold-ups and burglars. Thero ' aro six of tho fellows in tho gang arrested ar-rested yesterday, some of whom have made confession to crimes committed in Ogden, The confessions carry with them, the Impression on tho part ot the officers that they have in custody a bunch of robbers that havo been operating in nearby towns of the state of Nevada within the la9t few years. Tho men arrested yesterday give their names as John Martin, George Fitzgerald. Frank Williams, Felix Weaver, Francis Joseph and Harry Joseph. Williams and one of the Josephs Jo-sephs have confessed to the burglary of the H. F. Upp Jefclry store on Washington avenue, between Twenty-third Twenty-third and Twenty-second street, Tuesday Tues-day morning, and there is little doubt in the minds of the officers that the other four men were implicated In tho bu rglary. Tho premises were entered through a transom of the rear door and tho place was burglarized or opera glasses, diamonds and other valuable jewelry, a part of which was found in the possession of the two men and the major portion of the balance was found In various pawn shops of tho city. The fellows were arrested In tho St. Louis saloon and other down town places on Twenty-fifth street. According to the evidence at the hands of the officers the six men havo been working their way eastward from tho coast, burglarizing and robbing wherever an opportunity was afforded. They held up and robbed a number of trainmen fit Montello, Nevada, Saturday night, taking fiom them a watch and other jewelory, a part ot which has been found In the Ogden pawn shops which was deposited by them. The .officers .aver, that they have a clear case against three of tho men in the Upp burglary, and that there is little question but that tho evidence against the entire bunch for the robbery at Montello is conclusive as to their guilt. Martin. Fitzgerald and Williams wilt in all probability bo charged with tho of the H. F. Upp Jewelry storo on and the other men, Weaver and tho two Josephs, will bo held for the Nevada Ne-vada officers, and also be charged with being accomplices In the Ogden burglary. burg-lary. The officers feel that they have succeeded suc-ceeded in capturing a band of desperadoes des-peradoes who well deserve conttne-ment conttne-ment in the penitentiary. |
