Show POISONED WHEAT TO BE USED TO KILL PRAIRIE DOGS. Washington, March 11. Poisoned wheat 19 to be used as a bait to kill off tho prairie dogs, the stockmen enemy, that now infest Arizona and New Mexico and have become a men ace to the forest ranges there. On ranch lands, prairie dogs havs i proved destructive to a variety ot i crops, including wheat, gram, potatoes pota-toes aud sugar beets, while on grazing graz-ing lands, they destroy so much grass that the grazing capacity of the land Is reduced 50 to 75 per ceat. The forest service Is employing every effort ef-fort to prevent range deterioration. Last spring, a successful campaign was made against the prairie dog, and this year. It will be waged on a larger scale. The poison is prepared by coating the wheat with a preparation of strychnine, cyanide of potassium, anisee oil and molasses. |
