Aftor a ten-mile drive over the worst roads experienced in Iowa on the darkest night imaginable, and then a twenty-mile twenty-mile ride upon a handcar, Sheriff Grimes, with his prisoner, John 'Junken, tho confessed murderer of Clara Roen, the Ottumwa choir singer, sing-er, managed to escapo what he believed believ-ed to be the approach of a mob andi i landed his prisoner in the state pon- itentiary at Fort Madison. He left tho I jail in Sigourney last night for his j drive across the country upon the re-I re-I ceipt of a telegram from Ottumwa that a mob was coming. During the evening, Fred Rosen, brother of the dead girl, and four other oth-er men from Ottumwa appeared at the jail and asked to see the prisoner, j They were strangers to the sheriff and represented that they were from j Galesburg. Ills. The sheriff consent-j consent-j ed to permit thorn to get a glimpse of j the prisoner, but before they entered the corridor, they were searched ami four revolvers taken from them. It developed that they were in communication communi-cation with the Rosen vigilance committee com-mittee at Ottumwa. Burlington, la., March 11. A demonstrative dem-onstrative mob of 200 men and boys met Sheriff Grimes on his arrival here this afternoon with the negro Junken. The conductor was persuaded persuad-ed to stop the train at a crossing near a police station and thus outwltted-the outwltted-the mob.
