The total number of deaths in the registration area was 1.032,000, compared com-pared with 1.142.35S in 1920. The rate per 100,000 was 1163 9 compared with 1806.0 in 1 920. Based on the death rate for the registration area the number of deaths for the Whole I nlted States for 1921 approximates I 1 ,27 1.444. Heart diseases w-re responsible for one-r-ighth of all deaths or 130,351 deaths in 1921, but the rate per 100.-"00 100.-"00 declined from 149.7 to 147.0. Influenza In-fluenza and pneumonia in all formJ caused 88,458 deaths, compared With 1S2.205 in 1920. the rate declining from SOS. 3 to 99 S.
