Show brake sqoeak easy to avoid Insert Two Pieces of Inner Tube Between Lining and Band Squeak or chatter in external brakes may sometimes bo eliminated we are Informed by a garage man, by Inserting Insert-ing between the llnlnx and the band, :,. both ends, between the firt and se (.nd rivets, two pieces of inner tube about one-ciuarter of an Inch wide. This la accomplished by Inserting a screw driver or oJhi flat tool between the lining and the band and follow-ing follow-ing H With the small strip of tube. Brakes so equipped are said to take hold much more smoothly and to Operate Op-erate without grabbing This may cause a little exlra wear at the points Indicated, but If it makes an otherwise nolsv brake quiet, the 1 "' owner will doubtless be glad to pay for the extra wear. Before resorting to this expedient, however, it will be well for the garage man to examine the brakes carefully and bo sun- that the squeak or chatter chat-ter Is ii"t caoied by lining that has become glazed, lining that is worn so that the rivets are bearing on the drum, or Improper adjustment, any of which might cause the squeak There arc so many different causes for squeaking brakes that a garage man is often at his wit's end to know how to stop It Frequently the customer cus-tomer li Impatient, falling to understand under-stand that It may be no one thing but a combination that Is causing tho annoyance.
