Show Waterproofing Paper A BRITISH patent has been granted a new melhod of waterproofing paper to such an extent that it may bo used as a substitute for rubber or leather, or for the manufacture of small articles like purses The patent is abstracted ab-stracted in the October issue of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering and Ftates that the material Is prepared by Impregnating long-fibred long-fibred paper with a warm solution of animal and vegetable glutinous substances. After drying, dry-ing, whale oil or a fat Is rubbed into the treated paper. The Ions-fibred Japanese paper is considered con-sidered preferable, and the following impregnating impregna-ting solution is considered suitable: Gelatine one part, arrowroot or.c part, potassium bicarbonate one-half part, calcium chloride or glycerine three parts, aud to reduce flammabllity. three pans of ammonium carbonate are added These materials are all dissolved In one hundred part of water. When brittleness la not a factor, gelatine gela-tine alone may be used, and the treatment wilh fat or oil alluded to above is necessary only when the material Is subjected to alternate wetting wet-ting and drying. |
