The letter follows: Hon.Simon Bamberger, Governor of Utah, Salt Lake, My Dear Governor Bamberger: Your proclamation of the week of May 23-29 a3 a time for bringing home to the people of Utah the Importance Im-portance of better protection of forests against fire, and the responsibilities of the Individual and tho community in this matter, Is an action to which I give my hearty indorsement. I trust you will allow me to extend my congratulations con-gratulations to you on having taken this step, and my earnes goou wishes for the successful carrying out of so public spirited a movement. The matter of making adequate provision pro-vision for the safe-guarding and renewal re-newal of our forests is of vital importance im-portance to the nation. Our decreasing decreas-ing timber and paper supplies aro beginning be-ginning to make clear to all tho need for concerted action, and the states and tho nation must join hands in tho effort to halt forest destruction. Not only as a source of permanent supplies of timber but also as conservators conser-vators of great water supplies, our forests for-ests are essential to our industrial, economical and social welfare. Fire is their arch enemy. If we subdue that enemy and we can if we will we shall save our forests to the benefit of the people for all times. Very sincerely yours, 'A. T. MEREDITH, Secretary of Agriculture. |
