Show oo TAX DEFICIENCY IS REPORTED BY BAILEY j SALT LAKE, May 22. At yester-j day's meeting of the state board of equalization, the alarming statement was made by William Bailey, secretary secre-tary to the board, that there will be a deficiency in state revenues this vear of $809,000 and that for the state to como out on the right side, it would hp necessary to raiso tho assessement about 50 per cent higher than the present pres-ent rate an increase which, Mr. Bailey declared, would bo unthinkable and impossible. Mr. Bailey said that the legislature has fixed maximum tax rates lor fctate genoral purposes, state school purposes pur-poses and state high school purposes. However, in the theoretical case of raising the valuation by a blanket raise for the benefit of the general fund. It would not bo necessary to Increase In-crease tho revenue by 50 per cent Such a situation could be met, he said, by reducing tho $mount of the levy for state school and state high school pur-. pur-. poses to a rate sufficient to raise only the expected revenue.
