But just then every eye was turned toward the edge of tho village. vil-lage. There, talL and straight In his war shirt, stood Sintl. In his right hand wag his war club, in his left his spear. "Heh! heh! heh!" he laughed. "Go to the top of the ridge, all of you," he .called to our people, "keep your eyes on me and you shall see a good fight." To the top of tho ridge they wont, On camo the giants, their hearts strong for battle. Sinti now stepped forward and thrust his spear into tho ground. "My spear shall never be pulled up until I win this battle," he shouted as he started towards the giants. When only a little distanco was between them the giants raised the spears and gave their awful war whoop. At this Sintl turned and fled, they in close chase. The hearts of our people on tho ridge sank. The giants were overtaking over-taking him. The one nearest him raised his spear for the death thrust, but his feet slipped and he fell. Quickly Quick-ly Sinti turned and brought his club down on tho giant's head so hard that all tho people heard it. Sinti gave his whoop and started on again, the giants close after him. But their feet began to slip on the ground and one of them fell. Our hero stopped just long enough to crack his head with his club. Now the people saw why Sinti wore no moccasins. The cunning fellow fel-low knew that moccasin soles would got so slick from running on the grass that in a little while a man could not run; so he went bare-footed. The mountain men did not know that, so they wore their moccasins, slipped and fell. The giants found that out by this time and took off their moccasins and soon surrounded Sinti. And now the real fighting began. A spear struck Sintl full in the' He Stopped Long Enough to Crack the Giant's Head breast and cut a long gash'in his shirt But instead of blood from ,his breast, there came a 3tream of sand from his medicine snirL It so amazed tho giants to see a stream of sand instead of blood , that they lowered their spears and stood staripg at it. Sintl caught a handful of the sand as it ran out and threw it Into their eyes, which blinded them. From now on, Sinti's work was easy. His mighty blows broke the stone shields of tho giants, and ho cracked their big heads until not one of them was left on his feet. "00 |
