Show I THE SCARLET BRIGADE. In one of the eating houses of Ogden is a masterpiece depicting the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava, made memorable by Tennyson. The picture is historically correct. It shows the British cavalry in the desperate ride in to the "jaws of death." In the war just ended, had a cavalry brigade attempted a charge of that land, the men and horses would have been swept to death the moment the scarlet coats made a background for the machine guns. During the world conflict the troops avoided bright colors and even the buttons were in dark colors, because ono flash of red, one glitter of brass would bring a terrific flow of lead and steel. Those old war pictures are a study. Why did the soldier wear large fur caps and brilliant uniforms? It was to overawe. The fighting troops were drenscd to impress the enemy, and, at recruiting recruit-ing time to draw to the colors the young fellows. In the wnr which closed on Armistice day, there was none of this appeal, by colors, The troops were dressed in unattractive suits and the boys' pithily were persuaded, when they entered the trenches, Ihat to go unobserved was far better than to draw attention from icross No Sfan's Land. |
