Recommendations Recom-mendations that an experienced workman' work-man' be appointed to the next vacancy on the shipping board and that shipyard ship-yard employes be given first opportunity opportun-ity to purchase houses erected by the government during the war were made in a memorial sent to President Wilson Wil-son today by the national conference of American ship workers in session here. Inclusion of a man from their ranks on the shipping board, the memorial mem-orial paid, would Insure loyal co-operation of yard workers. The conference also drew up a memorial for presentation to congress urging immediato action to prevent the nation's merchant marine reverting revert-ing to its pre-war status. Such action the memorial declares, should include adoption of a definite shipbuilding program pro-gram government operation of the fleet until it Is capable of competing with foreign lines, construction of fast passenger and mail ships, recognition of workmen by inclusion on every board appointed for construction or operation, and maintenance of " the American navy in a position "commensurate "commen-surate with the standing or the United Slates as a nation." |
