Y., Feb. 11. Another dissension among members of the assembly as-sembly judiciary committee trying the five suspended Socialits assemblymen charged with disloyally was noted at the opening of today's session. Assemblyman Louis A Culllver took exception to a statement issued last night by Assemblyman Maurice Booth and William S. Evans, in which the two members of the tribunal declared it would not surprise them "to see a majority report recommending the reseating re-seating of the .f iyeuien on trial." Mr. CulHver attacked "as an expression expres-sion of fifty per cent Americanization not 100 per cent." the' following passage pas-sage appearing in the joint statement: "Loyalty is a test. It is a test dangerous dan-gerous to representaive government because the question of what is or what is not loyalty is an oplnon subject sub-ject to change. It has no definite standard." Before today's session opened Seymour Sey-mour Stedman, directing the Social- ' ists' case, stated he would ask for an adjournment this afternoon until next Tuesday, before being formally opening open-ing his side. Chairman Martin indicated indi-cated he would grant this request unless un-less there was vigorous objection from the prosecution. Counsel for the assembly judiciary i committee late yesterday completed presentation of evidence against the five suspended Socialist assemblymen being tried by the committee on the charges of disloyalty. Seymour Stedman, however, claimed that technically the prosecution could not "rest" until his side had read into i the record additional excerpts from documents introduced by committee counsel. This reading, which then was begun, had not been completed when adjournment was taken. In closing its case, the prosecution, which had charged the Socialist party with conspiring to bring about a revolution revo-lution in this country, drew from op-i op-i posing forces acknowledgement that, J by a referendum just completed, the party membership had ratified a min-J min-J ority report submitted at the Chicago I convention hist year pledging support i to the third (Moscow) international. ! 00 |
