President Wilson's Wil-son's address to the Amerjcan congress con-gress is cordially commented upon by this morning's newspapers, which couple cou-ple their commendation with the reiteration reit-eration of sentiments of hearty satisfaction satis-faction that he Is to attend the peace conference. ' They declare the president presi-dent will find the entente statesmen thoroughly in concurrence with his idealism and devotion to International justice. There is manifest a strain of anxiety anxi-ety in the editorials, although from different angles in various quarters with. regard to reconciling the president's presi-dent's principles as embodied in his fourteen points with the aspirations of thb allies. The Morning Post Insists upon the importance of -the exact relation rela-tion of the fourteen points to the peace settlement being understood. The newspaper thinks the points were accepted ac-cepted too hastily by the allied governments. gov-ernments. It relies, however, upon the president's definition of them as a noutlino of the basis of peace and regards them as "a serviceable instrument instru-ment with which to begin the work of securing peace." The Dally News asks anxiouslv for evidences of the acceptance of the spir-it spir-it of the fourteen points, the letter of which -was accepted, with one excep. tion, by the allies. "In all tlie world." it inquires, "who aro the statesmen who are backing not tho letter but the spirit of President Wilson's policy? The situation is full of menace. If it is to be redeemed it must be by the peoples of everv country." |
