Victory perched on the banners of the Boston Red Sox this afternoon whon they vanquished the Chicago National league champions by a score of three to two. Over 20,000 persons saw the exciting game in which "Babe" Ruth's big black bat figured for the first time in the series. Willi two red-hosed men on the bases, passed pass-ed by Tyler when he becamo unsteady in the fourth inning, the Baltimore Behemoth, called the "Babe,'.' cracked crack-ed into one of Tyler's shoots and seat it to the far away fence. When the ball came back' to tho diamond two Red Sox had raced across the plate .and tho puffing Ruth was called off at third base. The gamo seemed safely , In hand for Boston until the eighth when Ruth lost control and with a couple of hits by the Cubs the score was tied. Boston went "into the lead again in their half of the eighth on a single, a passed ball and a lurid heave of a sacrifice hit by Phil Douglas.-Ruth went bad again in the ninth and Bush, who was called in the box, stopped the Cubs. Thrown back on the defensive by two defeats on their home grounds, the Chicago Cubs engaged the Boston Red Sox on foreign fields this af tei -noon in the fourth combat of the world's series. Some 20,000 spectators saw the red -hosed champions of the American league renew tho offensive on their home grounds. Tho contest was fought on a rain-soaked rain-soaked field. Rows of empty seats mado yawning gaps in the spacious stands. Babe Ruth and Sam Jones warmed up for the home team while George Tyler and Phil Douglas got into condition for the Cubs. The batting order sent early today except that Ruth will bat sixth instead' of ninth is correct as sent, Tyler will pitch instead of HendrLx for Chicago. Owens gave decisions behind tho plate, O'Day at first, Ilildebrand on second and Klem at third base." First Inning. First half: The crowd gave Flack a good cheer when ho singled sharply to right after the count was two balls and one strike. Hollocher lined to Scott and Flack back to first base safely. Second half: The home folk gave Harry Hooper a big hand when he came to bat. With tho count two and three. Hooper drove a high fly to Flack. Shean drove a long hit against the left field fence for two bases. Strunk waited Tyler out until the count was three and two and then , fanned on a low curve. First half: Ruth took Paskert's grounder and threw him out. Scott came in fast for Merkle's grounder and threw him out at first. Pick beat out an infield hit which Thomas could not field in time. Dcnl singled sharply past Thomas, Pick going to second. Agnew almost picked Deal off first. Killifer forced Pick at third, Scott tw Thomas. No runs, two hits, no errors. Second half: Mclnnis sent up a high fly to Hollocher. A storm of applause j greeted Ruth as he came to bat and tho Chicago outfield complimented j him by backing up against the fence, j Pick made a pretty one-hand stop of 'Ruth's grounder and got his man at first. Tyler walked. Ruth's sweeping curve broke wide of tho plate. Flack forced Tyler at second, sec-ond, Scott to Shean. Hollocher grounded ground-ed out to Mclnnis unassisted, Flack going to second. Ruth picked Flack off second. Scott took tho throw. No runs, no hits, no errors. Second half: Thomas popped to Hollocher, who wont back to second to make the catch. Mann had to go out towards tho embankment to get Ag-now's Ag-now's long smash. Hooper went out, Merklc to Tyler. No runs, no hits, uo errors. Fourth Inning.. First half: Thomas threw out Mann at first. Scott went down behind soo-ond soo-ond base nnd robbed Paslcert of a hit. The Boston shortstop took Paskert's groundor on dead run and mado a sharp peg to first. Merklc flew out to Whiteinan. No runs, no hits, no errors. er-rors. Second half: Shean walked. Strunk flew out to Paskert, Shean went to second oa a short passed ball. Shean was given credit for a stolen bnso by the official scorer, Shean having started start-ed with the pitch. Whiteman walked. Hendrlx began to warm up for Chicago. Chi-cago. Mclnnis forced Shean at third, Tyler to Deal. Whiteman went to second sec-ond on tho play. Mclnnis was safe at first, Deal's throw to double him being late. Tyler tossed up three straight balls and then put over two strikes to Ruth. Whiteman and Mclnnis scored on Ruth's terrific throe-base hit to right center. Tho stands were in an uproar. Scott flew to Paskert. Two runs, one hit, no errors. Fifth Inning. First half: Pick popped a hit over Ruth's head. Hooper came in and took Deal's hoist. Killifer hit into a double play, Ruth to Scott to Mclnnio. No runs, no hits, no errors. Second half: Tyler took Thomas' dribbler and tossed him out. Deal made a nice play on Agnow's hopper and had his man at first. Hooper sent a high fly to Flack. No runs, no hits, no errors. Sixth Inning. First half: Tyler walked for the second sec-ond time. Flack forced Tyler off second, sec-ond, Ruth to Shean. Shean threw out Hollocher at first, Flack going to second. sec-ond. Thomas throw out Mann at first. No runs, no hits, no errors. Second half: Deal mado a sparkling play on Shcan's groundor nd got him at first. Pick tossed out Strunk at firs Tyler took Whiteman's grounder and threw him out. No runs, no hits, no errors. er-rors. Seventh Inning. First half: Scott throw out Paskert Merkle strolled, the fourth ball being low. Zoider batted in place of Pick. Zeider also walked. O'Farrell batted for Deal. O'Farrell hit into a double play, Scott to Shean 'to Mclnnis. No runs, no hits, no errors. Second half. Zeider went to third base for the Cubs and Wortman o second in place of Pick. Mclnnis singled sin-gled into left field. The stands rocked with applause when Ruth came -to baL Ruth sacrificed, Zeider to Merkle. Tyler took Scott's grounder and threw to Zeider who touched out Mclnnis on the lino, Scott reaching first. Wort-man Wort-man took Thomas' high fly. No runs, one hit, no errors. Eighth Inning. First half: Killifer walked. Hcndrix batted for Tyler. Hendrlx drove a long single into left field, Killifer going to second. On a wild pitch Killifer weut to third and Hendrlx to second. Mclnnis Mc-lnnis took Flack's grounder and touched touch-ed him out, Killifer and Hendrix holding hold-ing their bases. Hollocher up. Mc- uoc was put in 10 run ior nenunx. Killifer 'scored while Shean was throwing out Hollocher, McCabe taking tak-ing third. Mann up. Strike one. McCabe Mc-Cabe scored on Mann's pretty single to lefL Paskert up. Foul strike one. Thomas threw out Paskert at first. Two runs, two hits, no errors. Second half; Douglas went into the box for Chicago. Schang batted in place of Agnew. Schang shot a single over second. On a short passed ball, Schang went to second. Hooper sacrificed sacri-ficed and, when Douglas threw wild past Merklc, Schang scored and Hooper Hoop-er reached second. Shean up.
