Show America must not loso sight of the importance of maintaining its educational educa-tional system in its entirely even in war times, if a serious catastrophe is to be averted, said Dr. E. G. Gowans, state superintendent of public instruction, in-struction, at noon today at the round table meeting in the Weber club. He talked before a number of Ogden business busi-ness men, members of the school board, aud others and gave an interesting inter-esting analysis of educational work under present conditions. Dr. Gowans called attention to tho blunder of Great Britain in secrificing evorythmg to the prosecution of the war. The educational system had suffered, suf-fered, especially, he said, with the result re-sult that delinquency had increased to such an alarming extent that the empire em-pire had to pass stringent laws to cope with the condition. England had seen the blunder of her method too "late to forestall the deplorable result and tho stato superintendent . declared that America would have to keep a close check on her educational systems if a similar situation did not dovelop. Tho schools are of prime importance, he said, and must not be k allowed to suffer as a result of any national crisis. The problem of adapting school work to the needs of the present-day business and Industrial world was also considered by th'e speaker. He said that business had complained that the student.s being turned out of school were not fitted to entor the commercial commer-cial world and take up their share of responsibility, that they wore not trained as efficient citizens. He said the schools would be gled to co-operate with the business men in making the schools better to equip the pupils. Tho proposal was made for the establishing estab-lishing of a bureau to aid the business mon through working in co-operation with the schools. It was proposed to have the Ogden publicity bureau possessed pos-sessed of detailed information from each business man of Ogden as to the qualifications demanded of prospective employes and for the bureau to similarly simi-larly have Information on the students about to leave the schools for business so that the could work together. Dr. Gowans spoke this afternoon at the Ogden High school and will speak tonight at tho dedication of the Lewis school. |
