Show HELPING HAND IS GIVEN CITY AID Only one matter of importance came before the city commission this morning, thai being the petition of , Mrs. Emma N. Montgomery, who established es-tablished the Helping Hand Information Informa-tion bureau about two months ago at her home, 2447 Grant avenue, fur assistance as-sistance In keeping the institution in operation. While Mrs. Montgomery opened the information bureau a few weeks ago because she realized the need of such an institution in the city, she (jd not expect it would grow to such proportions. propor-tions. Imring the winter months many applicants came to the Helping Hand bureau and told their troubles and asked for help. Some were fed for ai day or two while storms were raging! and existence seemed dreary; others, found a place to sleep and many others were provided with employ-1 ment. The work accomplished has feci ived the endorsement of the best citizens of the city and when, a few days ago. Mrs. Montgomery annoum i to the city commission that she could not carry on the work without outside assistance, the matter was referred to Mayor T. Samuel Browning. This morning Ihe mayor reported to the commission that he had investigated investi-gated the work done by the bureau and that it was deserving of support, for it was performing a function as essential es-sential as that of any branch of the city government The commission adopted the report and voted to give to the bureau during the pleasure of the board the sum of $2T a month. The payment was voted to begin on April 1. Mrs. Montgomery will be able now to carry on the work, as the light expenses will be met from 1 this fund. i |
